Job summary

The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) seeks an experienced Athletic Trainer to support its comprehensive sports medicine program. The role includes recognizing, assessing, treating, rehabilitating, and reconditioning injuries for UNCW's 19 varsity sports, with primary support for the women's basketball team.

A Master's degree is required with at least two years in collegiate athletics. Licensure in North Carolina or eligibility, and professional certifications such as NATABOC,

The primary purpose of the Athletic Trainer is to support the university’s comprehensive sports medical program by being responsible for the recognition, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning injuries that occur to UNCW’s varsity athletes. This position will provide training coverage for UNCW Athletics, with primary support for the women’s basketball team, by applying professional judgment and discretion to each medical case, advising coaches on return to competition for student‑athletes, and demonstrating discretion and sound judgment in working with confidential information and the well‑being of the student‑athletes.

This is a full‑time 12‑month position, with benefits.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act (Clery Act) and is considered a mandatory reporter under University policy. This position will be required to complete annual training about reporting responsibilities and report Clery crimes that occur within one of three categories of properties: On‑Campus property, Non‑Campus Property, or Public Property.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

• Master’s degree in applicable field from a regionally accredited institution
• At least two (2) years of responsible experience in collegiate athletics, preferably with experience supporting a Division I Women’s Basketball program or a comparable intercollegiate athletics environment.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Experience as a full‑time, certified athletic trainer at the college/ university level.
• Certifications such as Active Release Technique; IASTM , Performance Enhancement Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Functional Movement Screen, or Dry Needling.

Required Certifications or Licensures

• Professional Rescuer CPR and First Aid certified AED certified.
• National Athletic Trainers' Association Board Certification – NATABOC .
• Possession of NC Athletic Training licensure or must acquire within 90 days.

The UNCW Department of Athletics sponsors 19 varsity sports and competes in the NCAA Division I as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association.
