Role Summary
The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is an ancillary health care provider and principal member of the sports medicine team. The ATC provides direct clinical care, including evaluation, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, and therapeutic intervention of emergent, acute, and chronic athletic injuries and illnesses, and is qualified to make return-to-play decisions. The ATC serves as a medical liaison to coordinate care with providers, other clinicians, parents, coaches, school administration, co-workers, and hospital administration. Sports medicine care is provided to professional and non-professional school‑age athletes participating in athletic events at off‑site locations and community events. Within school settings, the ATC oversees the medical care of athletes for the entire calendar year—pre‑season, mid‑season, and post‑season—and, when a school hosts away teams, provides care for those athletes as well.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct clinical care, including evaluation, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, and therapeutic intervention of emergent, acute, and chronic athletic injuries and illnesses.
- Make return‑to‑play decisions.
- Serve as medical liaison to coordinate care with providers, other clinicians, parents, coaches, school administration, co‑workers, and hospital administration.
- Provide sports medicine care to professional and non‑professional school‑age athletes participating in events at off‑site locations, schools, and community events.
- Oversee the medical care of athletes for the entire calendar year: pre‑season, mid‑season, and post‑season; and when a school hosts away teams, provide care for those athletes.
- Manage care for 150+ private‑school, 165+ middle‑school, and 300+ high‑school athletes (classification dependent).
Qualifications
- Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field.
- Preferred Education: Master’s degree in Athletic Training or related field.
- Required License: North Carolina Athletic Training License (LAT) or eligible National Athletic Trainer’s Association Board of Certification (ATC), eligible Current CPR/AED certification obtained by first day of employment, current valid NC driver’s license, and must be at least 21 years of age.
- Preferred License: American Heart Association CPR Instructor.
- Required Experience: Direct athletic training care in collegiate or secondary school setting; effective communication skills; Microsoft Office and Internet proficiency.
- Preferred Experience: Clinical affiliations with NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, or professional athletics; injury tracking surveillance system and neurocognitive testing experience.
