Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department is seeking an Athletic Field Maintenance Technician to support field upkeep across the North Region. The role involves mowing, aeration, fertilization, field layout and lining, and coordinating with athletics staff to ensure safe, ready fields for events and activities.

The position typically follows weekday daytime hours, with rare weekend work depending on activity schedules.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of one year related to the area of assignment.
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges.
  • Computer Skills: General knowledge of applicable computer programs.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, breakdown and clean during events.
  • Prepare athletic fields for games.
  • Clean restrooms and rental facilities as needed.
  • Remove debris and mow/trim ballfields; manage mud/water after storms.
  • Assist in brick laying, pipe laying, painting, carpentry and other tasks.
  • Layout measurements and line ballfields; assist in field maintenance.
  • Operate mowers, chainsaws, edger and other equipment used in maintenance.
  • Open park gates and remove trash; assist repair technicians.

POSITION SUMMARY

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is looking for an Athletic Field Maintenance Technician to join our team! This position will be based at various parks within our North Region and will perform day-to-day maintenance on our athletic fields, including mowing, aeration and fertilization as well as participating in field layout and lining duties. The incumbent will work closely with our athletics staff and be responsible for upkeep of our athletic facilities, ensuring they remain optimal sites for athletic events and activities. A typical schedule would be weekday daytime hours but may include occasional weekends depending on business need.

Region Specific Information

The North Park Region Maintenance & Operations Technician positions will cover parks and greenways located North of Interstate 85. A few of the parks within the North Region are Mallard Creek Park, Nevin Park, RL Smith, and Shuffletown Park. These parks and many other parks within the region host a multitude of events and activities that serve our community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Athletic field maintenance experience
  • Knowledge of athletics and athletic event operations
  • Class A CDL
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Perform setup, breakdown and cleaning during events
  • Prepare athletic fields for games
  • Perform routine and non-routine cleaning services to restrooms and rental facilities
  • Remove limbs and debris; blows leaves off sidewalks and greenways; clears mud and water from greenway tunnels after storms, and mow and trim ballfields
  • Assist in manual labor such as brick laying, pipe laying, painting, carpentry and other construction tasks
  • Layout measurements and line ballfields and assist in performing field maintenance
  • Operate power mowers, chainsaws, brush cutter, edger and clippers, power washers, ATVs, litter vacuum, and other equipment used in facility maintenance, landscaping, roadside maintenance, and right of way cleaning.
  • Open park gates and removes trash
  • Assist repair technicians in duties
  • May operate light equipment such as utility vehicles, tractors, mowers and dump trucks
  • May serve as a lead on a small work crew, community service workers, volunteers and/or part-timers
  • May receive, sort, and package materials
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Minimum of one (1) years of experience related to area of assignment

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Licenses/Certifications: Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver’s License and County Driving Privileges

Computer Skills: General knowledge of applicable computer programs

  • Light equipment used in maintenance, grounds keeping, and construction
  • Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to safe operation of this equipment
  • Safe work practices and hazards associated with work
  • Use of the tools, equipment, supplies, and methods used in the maintenance activities

  • Filling out daily work sheets and other required forms
  • Light trucks, small tractors, mowers, and similar automotive equipment
