Job Description

The Athletic Director (AD) is responsible for the direction and management of the entire physical education and athletic department. The AD sets the tone for good sportsmanship, good health, and the spirit of teamwork. The Athletic Director must work in conjunction with the three Division Heads and oversee all athletic programs. Additionally, the director sees to it that all programs within the Athletic Department adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the LHSAA. Additionally, this individual will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team and will be working with multiple coaches. The Athletic Director must possess excellent skills in organization, communication, and collaboration, effectively facilitating relationships with students, coaches, school personnel, and the public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for the entire athletic program, including regularly scheduled department-wide meetings.
  • Establish a culture within the athletic department that ensures a sense of fairness and equality among all sports.
  • Create and enforce proper health and safety procedures and protocols for student-athletes, including ensuring student-athletes have completed all necessary training and have been released through an annual physical to participate in athletic programs prior to the start of any season.
  • Oversee the recruitment, supervision, professional development, and evaluation of the entire athletic staff.
  • Ensure all coaches are performing their duties at the highest level of professionalism, including appropriate communication with other offices directed through the Athletic Director.
  • Consult with division principals on matters of teacher/coach recruitment, scheduling conflicts, and division-specific logistics.
  • Manage and control funds available for the athletic program within the scope of the school’s budget and report to the Chief Financial Officer on expenditures, including the preparation and recommendation of an annual budget.
  • Establish supervision over and schedule the use of all athletic facilities as well as establish the supervision to maintain all facilities.
  • Ensure the proper maintenance and security of all athletic equipment and athletic facilities, fields, and courts, working in coordination with the Director of Facilities.
  • Represent St. Martin’s Episcopal School in LHSAA matters with the approval of the Head of School.
  • Keep informed and up to date on all LHSAA, State, and National Federations affecting St. Martin’s Athletics and communicate those regulations to the appropriate members of the school community, including the Head of School.
  • Meet regularly with the athletic staff to ensure clear and efficient operations and communications in all athletic matters.
  • Ensure the integrity and fairness of all sports tryouts and selection processes, including appropriate and timely notifications that honor the dignity of students regarding their selection.
  • Develop and take responsibility for a consistent process to showcase all sports on campus.
  • Serve as a link between athletics and the admissions department.
  • Act as an advocate for the athletic program and St. Martin’s in the surrounding community.
  • Oversee the scheduling of all athletic contests, arranging for athletic transportation, and hiring of all game officials.
  • Maintain records of team and individual athletic accomplishments.
  • Maintain and revise the coaches’ and athletes’ manuals each year and conduct appropriate, annual meetings with coaches and families of athletes to review the information and standards in detail.
  • Attend a wide array of off-campus athletic events to demonstrate institutional support for all athletes.
  • Oversee the purchasing, distribution, collection, cleaning, repair, and storage of all athletic uniforms and equipment.
  • Conduct regular meetings for the athletic department staff to coordinate responsibilities and discuss matters of concern.
  • Ensure that the curriculum of the department in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve is in keeping with the stated philosophy, policies, and goals of the school.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the school and the athletic association.
  • Serve on the school’s Senior Leadership Team.
  • Take an active role in professional activities and attend relevant professional meetings and conferences.

This job operates in a professional school environment. Physical demands include being able to lift 20 lbs. of athletic equipment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, twelve-month position. Travel and occasional weekend and evening work will be required.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in physical education, education administration, or sports management is required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Three to five years of coaching experience and/or athletic administration in a school environment is required. Experience in an independent school preferred.
  • Ability to interface and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, administrators, parents, alumni, and guests.
  • Professional written and verbal communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Experience with G Suite preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous, and complex tasks and projects efficiently and effectively without constant supervision.
