Job summary

San José State University is seeking a Learning Specialist to provide comprehensive academic support for student athletes with identified needs. The role involves designing individualized strategies, monitoring NCAA eligibility benchmarks, and coordinating interventions with campus partners.

The position reports to the Managing Director of the Student-Athlete Resource Center and requires maintaining FERPA compliance, confidentiality, and accurate documentation.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related field; substitutions apply for experience.
• Three years of professional student services experience.
• Bachelor’s/Graduate coursework in counseling, interviewing, and conflict resolution where job-related.

Responsibilities

• Provide academic support focusing on executive functioning, study skills, time management and self-advocacy.
• Design and implement individualized learning plans based on student needs and eligibility.
• Monitor progress toward NCAA eligibility standards and track attendance and performance.
• Maintain accurate documentation and session records in student success systems.
• Communicate progress and concerns to athletics staff while protecting FERPA confidentiality.
• Collaborate with campus partners to coordinate interventions and referrals.
• Prepare reports related to eligibility certification, retention, and performance trends.
• Educate student athletes on NCAA expectations and degree requirements.
• Facilitate workshops on study skills and learning strategies.
• Serve as a resource to promote student athlete success.
