Institute For Advanced Learning And Research in Danville, VA, seeks an NDT Instructor for the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing program. You will deliver high‑quality instruction in RT, UT, MT, PT, and VT, support curriculum development, maintain laboratory operations, and mentor students toward industry‑recognized credentials.

This onsite role requires ASNT Level II or equivalent, or related degrees with years of NDT experience, and travel up to 25%.

Qualifications

  • ASNT Level II certification in RT, UT, MT, PT or VT (ANSI/ASNT CP-189).
  • Associate's degree in Science/Engineering/NDT with 5+ years NDT Level II experience.
  • High School Diploma or GED with 10+ years NDT Level II experience.
  • NAS 410 Level II certification in the NDT methods to be taught.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver classroom, lab, and hands-on instruction in RT, UT, MT, PT, VT.
  • Advise and mentor students throughout the program.
  • Prepare, set up, maintain, and tear down lab environments and equipment.

Full-time position requires eligibility to access controlled unclassified information (CUI) and export controlled data, and candidates must meet applicable federal requirements, including U.S. person status where required. This role is onsite in Danville, VA.

  • Range starts at $77,611 and could be higher based on NDT Certification level. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and determined based on market benchmarks and internal equity

What You Will Do

The Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction within the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program. This role supports students in gaining the technical knowledge and hands‑on experience needed to enter the defense manufacturing workforce. The instructor will teach accelerated, short-term training programs, support curriculum development, maintain laboratory operations, and provide student mentorship throughout the training experience.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Deliver classroom, laboratory, and hands‑on instruction in NDT methods.
  • Advise and mentor students throughout the training program.
  • Prepare, set up, maintain, and tear down laboratory environments and equipment.
  • Monitor and manage training materials, supplies, and consumables.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback.
  • Support curriculum development and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Maintain program documentation and training records.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and instructional best practices.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and industry partners to enhance program outcomes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Travel as needed to support program objectives.
Instructional content includes:
  • Radiographic Testing (RT)
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Visual & Optical Testing (VT)

As an NDT Instructor, you will play a critical role in preparing skilled technicians for careers supporting the nation's defense industrial base. Your expertise and commitment to hands‑on training will help students develop industry‑recognized skills and certifications while contributing to the growth of a highly qualified manufacturing workforce.

Shift Availability

ATDM Instructors and Technicians are assigned shifts based on training needs. Shift assignments are determined by business needs at the time of hire, performance, and tenure. This position requires flexibility to work any shift as program needs evolve. Compensation includes a shift differential based on assigned instructional hours. This position will support training on third shift.

  • First Shift: Classes begin at 7:00 a.m.
  • Second Shift: Classes begin at 3:00 p.m.
  • Third Shift: Classes begin at 11:00 p.m.

Evening, weekend, and off site instructional assignments may be required.

Qualifications
Your Knowledge and Expertise

Qualified candidates must possess one of the following:

  • Current American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in one or more of the following methods: RT, UT, MT, PT, or VT (per ANSI/ASNT CP-189, Paragraph 4.4.1.1); OR
  • Associate's degree in Science, Engineering, NDT, or a related field and a minimum of five (5) years of experience as an NDT Level II (or equivalent) in one or more NDT methods including RT, UT, MT, PT, or VT (per ANSI/ASNT CP-189, Paragraph 4.4.1.3); OR
  • High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as an NDT Level II (or equivalent) in the NDT method(s) to be taught (per ANSI/ASNT CP-189, Paragraph 4.4.1.4); OR
  • NAS 410 Level II certification in the NDT method(s) to be taught.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NAVSEA equivalency per T9074-AS-GIB-010/27.
  • Experience delivering technical training or instruction in NDT or a related field.
  • Experience supporting the submarine industrial base.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA technical publications and defense manufacturing requirements.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.
  • Experience performing NDT inspections of welded assemblies.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and student engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative training environment.
Essential Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while instructing and supervising laboratory activities.
  • Ability to lift, move, and transport training materials and equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate laboratory and instructional equipment.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to demonstrate and perform NDT techniques.
  • Ability to work in classroom, laboratory, and industrial training environments.
  • Ability to travel occasionally as required.
