Job summary

The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Danville, VA is seeking a hands-on ATDM Precision Manufacturing Technician – CNC Machining to support the NDT lab and ensure safe, functional lab operations. The role emphasizes hands-on instruction support for accelerated defense manufacturing training and equipment readiness.

You will assist instructors and students in the lab, help prepare labs, manage inventory, and uphold safety practices.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• 2 year degree or higher preferred.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work safely in a lab/shop.
• Familiarity with NDT methods and radiation safety is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Support NDT instructors during lab-based instruction for the ATDM program.
• Assist students in the lab with proper use of equipment and processes.
• Prepare labs for instruction, including setup and teardown.
• Maintain inventory of materials, tools, and equipment.
• Monitor and restock consumables as needed.
• Follow shop safety and radiation safety practices.
• Provide general operational and logistical support for the ATDM program.
• Travel occasionally, as required.

Sign-On Bonus: $1,000 sign-on bonus available to eligible new hires for the ATDM Precision Manufacturing Technician – CNC Machining role: $500 after 30 days and $500 after 90 days of continuous employment. Subject to taxes.

Compliance

This position requires eligibility to access controlled unclassified and other regulated technical information in accordance with applicable federal requirements. This role is not eligible for remote work and will be based onsite in Danville, Virginia.

Pay, Perks, & Benefits

• $27.00 – $28 per hour (with shift differentials where applicable)

Work Schedule

This position works a first-shift schedule designed to support advanced manufacturing operations. You may be expected to work other shifts as business needs determine.

How You Will Help the Team

You will play a critical support role in delivering high-quality hands-on instruction for the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program. By supporting instructors and students in the Nondestructive Testing (NDT) lab, you will help ensure labs are safe, well-equipped, and ready for instruction in a fast-paced, accelerated training environment.

What You Will Do

• Support NDT instructors during lab-based instruction for the ATDM program
• Assist students in the lab with proper use of equipment, materials, and processes
• Prepare labs for instruction, including setup and teardown
• Maintain inventory of materials, tools, and equipment
• Monitor and restock consumables as needed
• Follow and reinforce shop safety and radiation safety practices
• Provide general operational and logistical support for the ATDM program
• Travel occasionally, as required

Lab instruction includes the following NDT methods: Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), and Visual & Optical Testing (VT).

Your Knowledge & Expertise

• High school diploma or GED
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Knowledge of shop safety practices
• Technical math skills, including trigonometry
• Working knowledge of NDT methods: VT, MT, PT, RT, UT; Radiation safety
• Microsoft Office and general computer skills
• Comfort using technology in an instructional or training environment and a willingness to learn new tools
