Job summary

NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is seeking an Associate Water Use Inspector to support the Meter Test Facility in Maspeth, NY. Under the Chief Inspector, you will supervise staff, plan inspections and oversee meter projects to ensure accurate readings and compliance.

Qualifications include at least three years of mechanical experience in plumbing or water use inspection, with supervisory experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Three years of satisfactory full-time mechanical experience in plumbing or in water use inspection, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
• Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.

Responsibilities

• Plan, schedule and direct work of a group of assigned employees; supervise staff.
• Coordinate and oversee AMI and meter replacement projects.
• Conduct field inspections for meter defects, tampering and violations; perform minor repairs.
• Prepare violation reports and summons; review meter readings for inaccuracies; provide testimony.
• Direct Borough-wide Water Use Inspection Programs; supervise inspectorial field staff.
• Drive a motor vehicle.

Job description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and storm water, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP’s water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Customer Services (BCS) oversees the production and collection of water and wastewater bills along with all the work required to maintain our citywide network of meters and meter reading devices. BCS serves approximately 836,000 customers and generates more than $4 billion of revenue annually.

BCS is seeking to hire an Associate Water Use Inspector Level in the Meter Test Facility. Under direction of the Chief Inspector, the Associate Water Use Inspector 1 will:

• Plan, schedule and direct work of a group of assigned employees. Train subordinates as required and provide supervision.
• Coordinate and oversee special AMI and meter replacement projects.
• Conduct field inspections for evidence of meter defects and tampering and issues appropriate violations. Performs minor meter repairs.
• Assist in the preparation of reports of violations and summons activity and prepare violation reports. Review meter reading records and reports for possible inaccuracies and high or low water consumption. Provide testimony for the Department before the Environmental Control Board.
• Direct moderate sized Borough-wide Water Use Inspection Programs. Is in responsible charge of all inspectorial aspects of a Borough office and field force. Check in and review work performed by inspectorial field staff.
• Drives a motor vehicle.
• May temporarily perform the duties of a Level II Associate Water Use Inspector.

Physical/Environmental Factors:

Climbing ladders, pits confined spaces, lift heavy items, standing for prolonged times, all weather conditions, kneeling.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Three years of satisfactory full-time mechanical experience in plumbing or in water use inspection, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; or

2. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above.
