Job Description - Associate Vice President & Chief Facilities Officer (T236749)

As the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s key facilities leader, the next Associate Vice President & Chief Facilities Officer has a unique opportunity to guide the long‑term planning, development, and stewardship of the university’s physical environment. The role oversees all facilities operations, real estate, and capital planning while partnering across UAB and its health system to support growth, sustainability, and mission‑driven excellence.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Assesses and improves utilization of existing resources, develops a strategic plan for updating and renovating plant infrastructure, improves overall standards of custodial care and grounds upkeep, and strengthens the general facilities safety and maintenance programs.
• Manages the project bidding, contract award and/or negotiation process, ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal laws and with Title 39 (Alabama Code of 1975) and the University of Alabama System board rules. Collaborates successfully with contracted architectural and engineering firms.
• Encourages supply, construction and service contracts from MBE/WBE firms wherever practical, and coordinates UAB capital construction projects, equipment purchases and real estate transactions with the University of Alabama System Office and the Board of Trustees.
• Interfaces with compliance agencies, planning commissions, and local governmental bodies—including the State of Alabama, Jefferson County and the City of Birmingham—to obtain building approvals, permits, pass inspections and meet construction and renovation requirements.
• Oversees operations of the chilled water and steam enterprises, ensuring reliability of service and financial plans for efficient operations. Provides leadership in developing and implementing an innovative campus‑wide sustainability program, aiming to be recognized locally and nationally as a leader in sustainable practices.
• Leads the UAB Office of Real Estate, partnering with Facilities Planning in the acquisition and divestiture of real property as part of the campus master planning process. Manages the University’s property leasing program, including leasing of appropriate University property to tenants and securing short‑term leased property for University schools/divisions.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering or a related field and ten (10) years of related experience required. Work experience may not substitute for the education requirement.
• Facilities‑related professional registrations are preferred.
