Job summary

Omya Inc. in Cincinnati, Ohio seeks an Associate Scientist to independently advance R&D tasks and perform literature research. The role provides day-to-day laboratory leadership for technicians and supports development of patents and publications within an innovative global minerals company.

You will apply the scientific method, collaborate across teams, and stay current with methods and competencies. Travel may be required; US work authorization is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, material science, polymer science or related field.
  • 1–8 years of technical experience in the field with hands-on lab work.
  • Applies scientific method and statistics in problem solving.
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Good command of oral and written English.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • US employment authorization; sponsorship not available.

Responsibilities

  • Define problems and conduct literature reviews with stakeholder guidance.
  • Suggest new ideas and contribute to innovations.
  • Apply scientific method and statistics to technical development.
  • Provide day-to-day laboratory leadership for technicians.
  • Lead a small technical sub-team on a project.
  • Communicate findings clearly to internal technical audiences.
  • Coordinate with team on project goals and tasks.
  • Protect Omya IP and contribute to internal reports and patents.
  • Support ISO or safety activities as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

BASIC FUNCTION: An Associate Scientist independently works on tasks in work packages of R&D activities and can independently perform scientific literature research in fields related to the current work. They also keep themselves up to date with the latest scientific methods and competencies and can contribute under guidance to scientific publications, patents, and other forms of communication. They provide day-to-day laboratory leadership for lab technicians.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • With guidance mainly received from stakeholders and superiors, able to clearly define problems and routinely conducts literature reviews prior to tackling new projects or technologies
  • Suggests new ideas to solve problems and make innovative contributions
  • Effectively applies to the scientific method or engineering design process and statistics in the solution to problems in their technical development
  • Building competency on incorporation of information from outside of team, department and company to develop relevant solutions
  • Laboratory day to day leadership of technicians
  • Can lead a small technical sub-team of a larger well-defined project
  • Proactively seeks support and mentoring
  • Communicates clearly and effectively in a timely manner and verbal and written formats to varied, mostly internal, technical audiences
  • Understands the alignment of work package goals with the project and uses it to define appropriate tasks
  • Project oriented looking at some significant advancements
  • Demonstrates technical competency by developing value-creating solutions when presented with problems of defined scope and impact
  • Able to act as information resource on Team focus topics for stakeholders and other members of technical community
  • Uses Omya IP processes for protecting value Internal reports and documents of quality to be used in IDF’s and patents
  • Conducts patent searches and understands trends and technical needs
  • Consistently demonstrates the highest SHE standards and lives by the Omya values
  • Intervenes when inappropriate behavior is exhibited
  • Exposed to and pursuing Omya leadership attributes
  • May have role in coordinating ISO or safety activities for team or R&D department
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, material science, polymer science or similar.
  • Minimum of 1-8 years’ technical experience and demonstrated knowledge in field and a willingness to do practical laboratory work.
  • Effectively applies the scientific method or engineering design process and statistics in the solution to problems and their technical development.
  • Basic project management skills.
  • Good command of both oral and written English is required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Must possess current US employment authorization; sponsorship not available for this position.
