Job summary

Qualifications

• Learn to identify workplace hazards common to utility, industrial, commercial, and construction environments.

• Support implementation of hazard controls identified by supervisors and safety professionals.
• Learn fundamentals of Fall protection, Electrical safety, Excavation and trenching safety, Confined space entry, Lockout/Tagout, PPE, Defensive driving, SIF prevention.

Job Description

The Assistant Safety Coordinator is an entry-level developmental position that supports the implementation and administration of the company's safety and health management system across construction operations. This position provides hands-on learning opportunities for individuals new to the safety profession and serves as a training ground for advancement into a Safety Coordinator role.

The Assistant Safety Coordinator works under the direct guidance of Safety Coordinators, Safety Managers, project leadership, and field supervisors to gain practical experience in construction safety, regulatory compliance, hazard recognition, employee training, incident prevention, and safety program administration. The position is responsible for supporting safety initiatives while developing the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a career in occupational safety and health.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Program Support

• Assist with administration of the Safety and Health Program.
• Help maintain safety records, forms, training documentation, and compliance files.
• Support implementation of company safety policies and procedures.
• Assist with customer-specific and project-specific safety requirements.
• Learn applicable OSHA standards and company safety expectations.

Jobsite Inspections and Observations

• Participate in jobsite safety inspections alongside Safety Coordinators and project leadership.
• Conduct basic safety observations and document findings.
• Assist in tracking corrective actions and open safety items.
• Observe work activities and identify hazards under supervision.
• Learn proper inspection techniques and hazard recognition methods.
• Support documentation of audit findings and follow-up activities.

Training and Employee Development

• Assist with new hire orientations and onboarding activities.
• Help prepare training materials, toolbox talks, and safety meeting documentation.
• Track employee certifications and training completion records.
• Support logistics for safety meetings and training events.
• Participate in the delivery of toolbox talks and safety presentations as skills develop.
• Complete assigned professional development and safety training programs.

Hazard Recognition and Risk Reduction

• Learn to identify workplace hazards common to utility, industrial, commercial, and construction environments.
• Assist with field reviews of work activities and job hazard analyses.
• Support implementation of hazard controls identified by supervisors and safety professionals.
• Learn fundamentals of:

• Assist in gathering information following incidents, near misses, and property damage events.
• Help document witness statements, photographs, and incident details.
• Maintain incident tracking logs and corrective action reports.
• Participate in incident review meetings as a developmental learning opportunity.
• Learn company investigation procedures and OSHA reporting requirements.

Employee Engagement and Safety Culture

• Promote positive safety engagement throughout the workforce.
• Encourage employees to report hazards, near misses, and Good Catches.
• Participate in safety committee meetings and company safety initiatives.
• Build positive working relationships with field personnel, supervisors, and project teams.
• Support recognition programs and other activities that strengthen the company's safety culture.
• Serve as a visible and approachable safety resource while developing professional credibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate degree or coursework in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Technology, or related field preferred.
• Current students pursuing safety-related education may be considered.

Experience

• No prior safety experience required.
• Construction, industrial, utility, manufacturing, military, or skilled trades experience preferred.
• Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in occupational safety and health.
• Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office and electronic recordkeeping systems.

Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience will be considered.

Preferred Certifications

The following certifications are preferred at hire but may be obtained after employment through company-sponsored development:

• OSHA 10-Hour Construction
• First Aid/CPR/AED
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction (within 12 months)
• Competent Person training (as assigned)
• NFPA 70E Awareness Training
• Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST) eligibility pathway development
