PURPOSE OF POSITION:
• Under general supervision with latitude for independent judgement and initiative, the Associate Respiratory Therapist level I, performs a variety of respiratory therapeutics including duration, effective communication and patient assessment.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs arterial blood gas punctures, aspirates blood from arterial lines and analyzes blood gases using point of care analysis technology (I-STAT).
2. Interprets blood gas results and makes recommendations accordingly.
3. Performs pulmonary function tests (PFT) in the PFT Lab (requires additional training by PFT Lab Supervisor).
4. Setup and monitors oxygen/Heliox/medical air delivery equipment (masks, cannulas, HFNC, trache-collars, etc.).
5. Assists with endotracheal intubation and verification of endotracheal tube placement.
6. Utilizes x-ray and breath sounds to assess correct placement of ETT and makes adjustments as needed.
7. Performs extubation procedure and monitors patients post extubation status.
8. Setups, manages, monitors, troubleshoots a variety of mechanical ventilators (Servo-U, High Frequency Oscillator, PB-980, Philips V-60, Hamilton MRI/C1).
9. Performs weaning assessments for patients on ventilators, utilizing RSBI, NIF, VC, as per physician's orders.
10. Assessment of pre and post bronchodilator therapy using pre and post peak inspiratory pressures.
11. Administers respiratory medications (bronchodilator & mucolytic) for patients with artificial airway or by mouthpiece/mask.
12. Performs pre and post peak flow assessments for patients with compromised respiratory functions.
13. Participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and participates as a member of Rapid Response Team.
14. Complies with Infection Control standards as per procedures in the handling of RT equipment.
15. Meets all compliance standard requirements such as annual physical evaluation/assessment, Multi Star Training, Right to Know, fire drill participation, etc.
16. Participates in performance improvement activities as assigned.
17. Stores and Handles Medical Cylinders and Piped Medical Gases.
18. Responsible for enhancing his/her personal and professional development through attendance at training sessions within and outside of Lincoln Medical Center.
19. Performs airway clearance procedures utilizing suctioning, CPT, and other airway clearance devices.
20. Responsible for wearing professional attire while on duty and follows dress code policy.
21. Uses safe practice for putting/donning personal protective equipment (PPE).
22. Documents in EMR (EPIC) and/or paper all RT services administered and delivered for direct patient care.
23. Follows Policy & Procedure for proper documentation during scheduled and non-scheduled "Downtime".
24. Adheres to the Vision, Mission and Value Statement of the organization in all endeavors.
25. Participates in Quality Assurance data collection activities in the RT Department.
26. Performs all other related respiratory therapy duties and procedures.
1. Graduation from an Associate Degree program in Respiratory Therapy approved by the New York State Board of Education or a program determined equivalent in accordance with the Commissioner of the State Board of Education's regulations; and,
2. Possession of a current license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of New York; and,
3. Possession of current registration as a Respiratory Therapist issued by the National Board of Respiratory Care.
Special Notes:
Individuals providing respiratory therapy services in New York on or after January 1, 1994 who believe they will meet, and submit documented evidence from the State Education Department, Division of Professional Licensing Services, of receipt of an application for licensure under the so-called grandparenting provisions of the new licensing law may continue to practice until either December 31, 1994 or receiving notice from the State Education Department of denial of licensure, whichever occurs first.
At the time of appointment, and to maintain the position of Associate Respiratory Therapist, individuals must meet and maintain the licensure requirements set forth by the New York State Education Department covering the practice of respiratory therapy.
1. AS degree or higher in a health-related field.

4. BLS
5. FDNY Fitness Certificate G-46 & G-71 Preferred
• Various types of Invasive and Non-Invasive Ventilators, Oscillators, Air Compressors, Air Blenders.
• Medical Gas Cylinders (E, H).
1. Strong clinical background of the ICU patient with pulmonary diagnosis.
