Job summary

Jewish Family and Children’s Services in San Francisco seeks an Associate Resident Mentor to support residents with daily routines, safety, and independence within the Gary Shupin Independent Living Community. Under supervision, you provide direct encouragement, monitor medications, assist with meals, and help residents build life skills.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Paid training is provided; no prior experience with adults necessary.
  • Some caregiving or instructional experience preferred (babysitting, tutoring, camp counseling, etc.).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace is preferred.
  • Eager to learn, patient, and able to build trusting relationships with residents.
  • Strong observation, assessment, and response skills for daily tasks.

  • Support residents in following daily routines and PPP goals; provide day-to-day assistance with hygiene, safety, and social activities.
  • Monitor medication and accompany residents to medical appointments.
  • Assist with meal preparation and help facilitate community integration and social skills.
  • Complete daily documentation of activities, plans, progress notes, and reports.

Associate Resident Mentor
AGENCY OVERVIEW:

Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS) has served the San Francisco Bay Area for 175 years. We offer world-class services to support individuals and families across all stages of life, including adoption, mental health, senior care, disability services, financial assistance, Holocaust education, and youth development. Our mission and work are rooted in Jewish values, and we serve people of all faiths and backgrounds.

The Disabilities Services program provides comprehensive support for neurodivergent individuals and their families. We offer information, advocacy, care management, counseling, a vibrant social club, and residential support through the Gary Shupin Independent Living Community.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Residential Manager, the Associate Resident Mentor supports residents in their daily activities and routines, helping to foster a safe, supportive, and engaging living environment. The Associate Resident Mentor provides direct support and encouragement to residents as they build skills for greater independence.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
  • Pay Range: $23.00 – $25.00 per hour (depending on experience)
  • Employment Type: full-time, non-exempt position with benefits
  • Employer 403(b) retirement match plus additional employer contribution (subject to eligibility)

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supports residents in following their established daily routines and Participant Program Plan (PPP) goals
    • Provides day-to-day support and encouragement with hygiene, safety awareness, personal, domestic, social/recreational, and communication activities
    • Reinforces skills and routines introduced during Independent Living Skills (ILS) sessions
    • Monitors medication and accompanies residents to medical appointments
    • Supports community integration and development of social skills through encouraging and facilitating recreational activities
    • Completes daily written documentation of activities as assigned, including plans, progress notes, and reports
  • Prepares appropriate meals for residents
  • Exercises mature judgment and relates to individuals in a warm, caring, and respectful manner
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • No prior experience working with adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities required – paid training is provided
  • Some experience in a caregiving, supportive, or instructional role is preferred (examples include babysitting, assistant teaching, camp counseling, tutoring, coaching, or senior care); experience with adults is not required
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive)
  • Eager and willing to learn, with an interest in helping others
  • Personable, warm, and patient, with the ability to build trusting relationships with residents
  • Highly skilled in observing, assessing, and responding to clients that may be encountering challenges and difficulties with their daily tasks
