Job summary

Beaufort County seeks a Probate Associate Judge to oversee cases from initiation to completion, preside over hearings, conduct legal research, and issue orders for Beaufort County.

This role also involves supervising staff, drafting court policies, preparing administrative reports, and coordinating with lawyers and public agencies to ensure lawful and efficient court operations. A JD and SC bar admission are required, with at least two years of related experience.

• Requires a Juris Doctor degree and two years of related work experience.
• Admission to the practice of law in South Carolina.

Responsibilities

• Presides over hearings and trials, issuing orders and rulings for Beaufort County.
• Supervises Probate Court staff.
• Trains Court staff and drafts policies.
• Performs legal research and renders opinions for the Judge and Court staff.
• Interfaces with lawyers, the public, and other government agencies.
• Delivers presentations at seminars on legal matters.
• Prepares reports for County and Court Administration.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Probate Associate Judge handles assigned cases from initiation to completion, presides over hearings, conducts legal research, and issues orders for Beaufort County. Duties also include: supervising assign staff, drafting Court policies, and preparing administrative reports.

Examples of Duties

• Presides over hearings and trials before the Court, both in the courthouse, hospitals, and other locations; addresses issues and written rulings/orders in connection with these hearings/trials.
• Supervises Probate Court personnel including clerks in the performance of their duties.
• Trains Court staff.
• Reviews and conducts legal research regarding matters pending before the Court; renders opinion to the Judge and Court staff.
• Interfaces with lawyers, the general public, and others doing business with the Court including official of other government agencies.
• Delivers presentations at seminars for lawyers, judges, hospital staff, and law enforcement on various legal matters.
• Prepares reports for the County and Court Administration.
• Performs other related duties of a similar nature or level.

Typical Qualifications

Requires a Juris Doctor degree; two (2) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses Or Certifications

Valid Driver’s License. Admission to the practice of law in South Carolina.
