Associate Laboratory Microbiologist II, Bureau of the Public Health Laboratory

ONLY PERMANENT EMPLOYEES IN THE TITLE OF THE ASSOCIATE LABORATORY MICROBIOLOGIST.

The NYC Public Health Laboratory (PHL) is a leading public health lab in the U.S., providing critical clinical and environmental testing services to NYC residents. With over 100 years of experience, our team of 200+ staff is dedicated to safeguarding public health by supporting NYC DOHMH's initiatives against various health threats, including COVID-19, TB, and waterborne diseases.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Supervising, hiring, training, and evaluating laboratory staff and trainees.
  • Managing daily laboratory operations, especially during outbreaks.
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and safety protocols.
  • Managing laboratory supplies and inventory.
  • Assisting in laboratory activities and cross-training team members.
  • Performing high and moderate complexity testing on clinical and environmental specimens.
  • Maintaining quality control and assurance programs.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience in clinical or environmental diagnostic testing laboratories.
  • Possession or eligibility for a NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License.
  • Supervisory experience in an environmental or clinical lab setting.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or related sciences plus one year of lab experience, or
  • At least 90 college credits with relevant experience, or
  • For pre-1963 training: specific chemistry and biology credits as detailed.

This position is open to qualified individuals under the 55-a Program. NYC residency is generally required within 90 days, with exceptions based on employment history.
