The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Shield and ID Unit is responsible for producing and distributing photo identification cards for all members of the service and certain categories of non-members. It maintains the Identification Card System, ensures the security of all identification cards, and manages the acquisition and security of all related equipment. The Unit also handles the procurement, assignment, distribution, and maintenance of all Department shields, ensuring their authenticity and maintaining the Shield Desk Application. The Uniform Services Unit manages retiree clearances, issues LEOSA HR218 cards, Pistol Inquiry letters, and oversees the Uniform Transportation Benefits Program. Additionally, the Police Ride Programs for Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Railroad, and NYC Transit allow uniformed members to ride trains free of charge with a police ride pass.
The Associate Investigator will conduct Interstate Identification Index checks on retirees requesting updates, renewals, or replacements of their retired identification cards. Responsibilities include reviewing Triple I checks, retiree applications, verifying duty and pistol license status, preparing and processing identification cards for various personnel changes, verifying paperwork, troubleshooting ID card printers, maintaining logs, and participating in projects related to shields and ID cards.
