  • Early-stage Venture Investing: identify, maintain, and prioritize a pipeline of early-stage venture investment opportunities; conduct due diligence and investment analysis; prepare materials for Investment Committees.
  • Relationship Development and Management: build and maintain a network with investment professionals to source high quality deal flow.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Sorenson Impact Institute's Impact Investing team seeks an Associate to join our Salt LakeCity-based impact investing and student training program. The Associate will be joining a team investing in high impactentrepreneurs while simultaneously training the next generation offinance and impact investing professionals. We're seeking a teammember with experience in investing or related fields and acommitment to student training, social innovation, and impact. The right candidate is a leader and a teacher – entrepreneurial, bold,creative, and can excel in a fast-paced, startup environment, readyto work directly with students daily.

The Associate will be responsible for training students in ourprogram and managing investment processes and operations. Specifically, the Associate will be responsible for sourcing newinvestments, leading due diligence, preparing investment materials, and managing investment operations – all while training and mentoring student interns.

The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic investment professional withexperience across the lifecycle of an investment, includingsourcing, underwriting, and executing new investments. Candidatesshould have a strong commitment to impact and bring anentrepreneurial and innovative approach to the role. The Associateshould also have a passion for teaching and mentoring, as training and inspiring the next generation of venture capital and impactinvesting professionals is core to our work.

Responsibilities
Mentor and Train Student Interns
  • Equip a rotating cohort of student interns with hands-onexperience in venture capital and impact investing throughunderwriting and full-cycle due diligence for early-stage deals(pre-seed-Series A).
  • Lead student investing teams in due diligence, apprenticinginterns in investor workflows, and teaching analytical frameworkssuch as market sizing, impact analysis, financial modeling, andmarket research.
  • Create, contribute to, and lead recruitment activities andtraining sessions for new student interns and at other SorensonImpact Institute activities and events.
Early-stage Venture Investing
  • Identify, maintain, and prioritize a pipeline of early-stageventure investment opportunities.
  • Conduct comprehensive due diligence and investmentanalysis.
  • Oversee preparation and presentation of investment opportunitymaterials to Investment Committees, editing student scripts andpresentations.
Relationship Development and Management
  • As needed, build and maintain a network with investmentprofessionals at other impact and traditional VC firms in order tosource high quality deal flow.
Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher educationcan be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience(Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related workexperience).

Supervisor, Investment Management: Requires abachelor's (or equivalency) with up to 2 years of directly relatedwork experience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.

Preferences
  • Experience in venture capital, private equity, investmentmanagement, or relevant non-finance fields, including experience infinancial or operational experience in early-stage businesses orfund management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • An interest and ability to teach and explain venturecapital/impact investing topics to students who are new to thefield
  • Strong financial analysis and modeling skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build high value industryrelationships
  • Mentorship or teaching experience
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Demonstrated desire and capability to work with and trainstudent interns
  • Ability to collaborate and function effectively on a highlymotivated and entrepreneurial team
