Job Description

Under the direction of senior leadership in the Legal and Compliance Team, this position will serve as an advisor to the Claims Team and the Company regarding insurance coverage, extra-contractual disputes, and litigation.

Claims Focus

This role involves conducting research, drafting legal opinions, participating in claim review meetings, examining records, conducting investigations, attending depositions and mediations, managing outside panel counsel, and overseeing coverage and extra-contractual litigation. The role also includes helping draft and review product forms, participating in negotiations, and providing leadership updates on major projects and training.

Responsibilities/Tasks

• Apply legal principles, knowledge, and skills based on experience.
• Evaluate and select appropriate legal techniques and procedures to resolve issues.
• Conduct legal research and provide timely legal opinions with minimal supervision.
• Use independent judgment and creative solutions.
• Handle complex legal projects requiring originality.
• Possess broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures related to claims and coverage.
• Identify risks and help design controls to mitigate them.
• Advise on risk evaluation, possible outcomes, and their probabilities.
• Review and draft policy language to meet business objectives.

• Plan and conduct educational programs on legal matters, focusing on claims handling.
• Work on special projects as assigned.

Additional Claims Focus Responsibilities

• Provide legal support to Claims and Legal professionals.
• Serve as liaison between Claims and Legal teams.
• Update and guide on high-risk claims and litigation.
• Coordinate with outside counsel on research, strategy, depositions, hearings, and appeals.

Employment Qualifications

Education: Juris Doctor Degree and active bar admission in the employed state(s). Continuous learning is required.

Experience: Minimum five years handling coverage matters or litigation, preferably in-house or private practice. In-house insurance experience is a plus.
