Accountabilities

As a key member of the legal team, you will provide independent legal counsel, manage organizational risk, and help ensure that business activities comply with applicable laws and regulatory requirements.

  • Provide strategic legal advice: Counsel organizational leadership and business stakeholders on legal issues affecting strategic priorities, operations, products, and services.
  • Manage legal risk and compliance: Identify, assess, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks across relevant operational areas, including compliance, privacy, intellectual property, and governance.
  • Draft and negotiate contracts: Structure transactions, prepare and review complex commercial agreements, and negotiate terms that protect organizational interests while supporting business objectives.
  • Advise on data privacy and intellectual property: Provide guidance on the responsible handling of information, intellectual property rights, and related legal obligations.
  • Support corporate governance: Advise on governance matters, organizational policies, and legal processes that promote accountability and sound decision-making.
  • Manage litigation-related matters: Support litigation management and related legal issues, coordinating appropriate responses and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams: Deliver practical, business-oriented legal guidance to stakeholders across the organization, ensuring legal considerations are integrated into day-to-day decisions.
  • Strengthen legal operations: Improve legal workflows, processes, and documentation to enhance efficiency, consistency, and risk management.
  • Monitor legal developments: Stay informed about emerging legislation, regulations, and industry trends, assessing their potential impact and recommending appropriate action.
  • Support organizational innovation: Help teams evaluate new initiatives and opportunities while balancing legal requirements, operational needs, and organizational priorities.
Requirements

The ideal candidate is an experienced legal professional who can combine subject matter expertise with strategic thinking, clear communication, and a practical approach to solving complex legal and business challenges.

  • Professional experience: 8–10 years of legal experience, with a focus on one or more areas such as compliance, intellectual property, data privacy, legal operations, corporate governance, litigation management, or commercial contracts.
  • Education and licensure: Juris Doctor (JD) from an American Bar Association-approved law school and active membership in a state bar.
  • Relevant expertise: In-depth knowledge of one or more key legal disciplines, supported by a track record of applying that expertise in a technology-driven or nonprofit environment.
  • Strategic execution: Ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable business advice that informs leadership decisions and stakeholder outcomes.
  • Risk management and problem-solving: Strong analytical skills and a solution-oriented mindset, with the ability to identify potential issues, assess risks, and develop practical solutions.
  • Communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to tailor legal guidance to different audiences and communicate recommendations directly and clearly.
  • Digital literacy: Proficiency with digital collaboration and productivity tools, with an understanding of responsible and secure data handling in virtual work environments.
  • Attention to detail: Strong organizational skills and a commitment to accuracy, quality, and thoroughness in legal analysis and documentation.
  • Adaptability: Ability to manage changing priorities, respond to new challenges, and work effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Location: Must reside in the United States.
  • Travel availability: Willingness to travel for two company-wide retreats each year.
  • Preferred qualifications: Additional certifications in relevant legal subject areas are an advantage.
