Job summary

The SpartanNash YMCA in Michigan is seeking an Associate Executive Director to oversee day-to-day operations of the branch, programs, staff, membership services, and facilities. The role drives operational excellence and member engagement through high-quality services while ensuring safety and compliance.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day management and overall operations of the SpartanNash YMCA. This role provides leadership and oversight for branch programs, staff, membership services, and facility operations, ensuring all functions operate in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards established by the YMCA.

The Associate Executive Director drives operational excellence by delivering high-quality programs and services that support member engagement, growth, retention, and community impact. This position fosters a culture of collaboration, accountability, and service, while maintaining a safe, welcoming, and well-managed facility environment. Responsibilities include supervising and developing staff, monitoring budgets and financial performance, supporting fundraising efforts, and ensuring compliance with safety, risk management, and regulatory requirements.

The Associate Executive Director plays a key role in enhancing the member experience and supporting the overall growth and sustainability of the SpartanNash YMCA. This position may involve early morning, evening, weekend, and on-call responsibilities as needed to support branch operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Program Development
  • Manages and monitors program and membership growth and quality
  • Guides the visioning process of program development and provides the leadership that will encourage the development of new programs
  • Maintains relationships and visibility within the community including relationships with local school districts and community organizations
  • Develops and maintains best-in-class programming
  • Implements membership strategies that support retention of existing members.
  • Organizes membership events and represents the Y at community events to promote the Y.
  • Establishes new program activities, increases participation, and expands programming within the community in accordance with Association/Branch strategic and operating plans
  • Engages volunteers and supports their development
  • Uses the Y Voice to effectively tell the YMCA story
Fiscal Management
  • Manages and monitors the operating budgets and annual budget development
  • Assists staff in identifying and meeting all development needs with action plans built into the next fiscal year budget
  • Monitors monthly budget and year-end forecasting
  • Operates program areas within directives and policies of the Association
  • Maintains systems of financial control including revenues, expenses, and inventories
Financial Development
  • Establishes sufficient revenue to provide services consistent with established goals
  • Actively participates in and supports the goals of the annual campaign through building relationships, engaging volunteers, and carrying out other assigned fund raising duties
Human Resource Management
  • Manages full and part‑time employees, including director‑level and frontline staff, and supervises their overall direction, coordination, and evaluation
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Association’s policies and applicable laws
  • Sets goals and objectives for staff under their supervision; provides staff training as necessary
  • Conducts annual performance reviews and recommends salary adjustments
  • Recruits, Interviews, hires, and trains staff in accordance with established Association policies; plans, assigns, and directs work; rewards and disciplines staff; addresses complaints and resolves problems
Facility Management
  • Monitors and assists in the maintenance of clean and sanitary programs environments; and meets all state and local licensing requirements where applicable
  • Knows and administers the appropriate EAP (Emergency Action Plan) for any situation, including first aid or CPR, work‑related employee injuries, etc.
COMPENSATION

$60,000 - $75,000 ; Salary, Exempt

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Business Administration preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of supervision, program development, budget management, fundraising, and community collaboration experience preferred. Previous YMCA or not‑for‑profit experience preferred
  • Proven Expertise: Experience in staff development, staff supervision and development, quality assurance and implementation, and fiscal management and budgeting; Demonstrated ability to manage employees and budget oversight, team development and performance management; Excellent communication skills both written and oral. Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess and align department initiatives with organizational goals. Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles
CERTIFICATES & LICENSES
  • Background Check: State of Michigan criminal clearance (ICHAT).
  • Safety Training: Bloodborne Pathogen training upon hire.
  • Emergency Certifications (within 60 days):
