Job summary

Asset Living, a nationwide property management firm, seeks an Associate Corporate Counsel focused on Employment & Labor to partner with HR and operational leaders across a multi-state workforce. Remote work arrangement with reporting to the General Counsel and CEO as needed.

The attorney will handle agency charges, pre-suit resolutions, litigation management with outside counsel, and provide practical guidance on policies, leave, and employment-related compliance across the organization.

Qualifications

• JD from an ABA-accredited law school and active membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
• 3–5 years of employment and labor law experience at a law firm, in-house, or both, including handling agency charges and employment litigation.
• Experience in property management, real estate, or another multi-site industry is preferred but not required.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound recommendations quickly.
• Direct, candid, and concise communication style, able to explain legal issues in plain language to HR professionals and business leaders.
• Ability to manage a high volume of matters, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
• Highest ethical standards, self-motivated and resourceful, able to build credibility with colleagues.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with HRIS and e-discovery platforms is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Report to General Counsel and assist with reporting to CEO and Board on material legal matters.
• Manage and respond to agency charges before EEOC, Texas Workforce Commission, and other agencies; draft statements and represent the company in mediation.
• Evaluate and respond to attorney demand letters; draft settlements and releases.
• Manage employment lawsuits and arbitrations with outside counsel; review pleadings and discovery; monitor budgets.
• Draft legal holds; coordinate preservation and production of documents; coordinate with IT on e-discovery; prepare employees for depositions.
• Engage outside counsel when needed; negotiate terms; review invoices and maintain case files.
• Advise on terminations, investigations, and return-to-work issues across federal/state/local law.
• Advise on leave programs, disability accommodations, and return-to-work processes.
• Review and draft employee handbook and HR policies; monitor developments in employment laws.
• Collaborate with HR and management to train on legal matters and operational decisions.
• Travel up to ~10% of time for property visits or internal meetings.
