The Opportunity

Popular Science is excited to add an Associate Editor to our team. If you’re fascinated by how things work and have an enthusiasm for crafting stories, this might be the perfect role for you.

The Associate Editor will be responsible for overseeing our Ask Us Anything series and editing other features as needed. We’re looking for someone who takes joy in organization, loves chasing down random story ideas, has impeccable attention to detail, and understands the importance of fact-based journalism.

At Popular Science, we’ve been demystifying our weird world for 153 years. We’re focused on bringing compelling and accessible stories to our readers. We hope you’ll join us.

Key Responsibilities

1. Research, write, assign, and edit 1-3 stories/day
2. Pitch and write 2-4 stories/month
3. Develop and maintain relationships with freelancers and contributors to ensure a steady flow of high-quality content
4. Provide general newsroom assistance to keep things running smoothly (homepage maintenance, invoice processing, etc.)
5. Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices, and make recommendations for improvements to Popular Science’s editorial processes
6. Work with the editor-in-chief to plan and execute long-term editorial strategies

Qualifications

1. Minimum 1-3 years editing experience, preferably at a tech or science publication
2. Minimum 1 year experience writing, preferably for a science publication
3. Strong grasp of AP style, standard editorial practices, and ethics
4. Excellent communication, writing, and editing skills
5. General delightful disposition with an ability to deliver helpful feedback
