Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah is seeking an Assistant Director of Data Science & AI to lead the Office of Data Science & AI, shaping strategy and expanding AI- and data-driven initiatives across research and clinical programs.

This role targets a computational cancer biologist or data scientist with hands-on experience applying LLMs and AI tools to oncology and genomic data, ready to guide growth and collaboration.

Qualifications

• PhD in oncological sciences or closely related field.
• Postdoctoral research experience in an academic cancer center or comparable setting.
• Hands-on experience with LLM-based or other AI tools and evaluation.
• Proficiency in Python, R, and Bash with reproducible pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a close partner to the Senior Director, representing the office in meetings and reporting outcomes.
• Assist in day-to-day leadership and growth of the Office of Data Science & AI, including strategy and onboarding.
• Design, develop, and deploy LLM-driven AI systems for biomedical, genomic, and clinical data.
• Develop evaluation frameworks for reliability, safety, and performance of AI outputs.
• Lead analysis of real-world oncology data and translational research.
• Translate questions into pipelines, tools, and dashboards using Python, R, and Streamlit.
• Collaborate with clinical, translational, and research teams to deliver data science applications.
• Communicate findings to cross-functional audiences through presentations and reports.
• Contribute to grant applications, publications, and conferences.
• Coordinate annual symposiums, workshops, and seminars.
• Mentor rotation students and junior staff.
