Job summary

Vir Biotechnology, Inc. is seeking an Associate Director, Principal Data Engineer to lead scalable data, cloud, software, and AI-enabled research platforms in San Francisco, with three days in-office.

You'll build AI workflows, QC/QA, and regulatory reporting, partnering with scientists, data scientists, and engineers to deliver trusted, scalable solutions. The role demands a strong background in data engineering, cloud architecture on AWS, and practical AI implementation to convert complex data

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field.
• 12+ years in data engineering, software engineering, or scientific computing.
• Strong hands-on Python/Java, scalable data pipelines and APIs.
• Experience with AI/ML-enabled scientific apps using leading LLMs.
• AWS cloud infrastructure expertise and modern data platforms.

Responsibilities

• Build AI-enabled research workflows and agents to assist scientists.
• Develop AI agents for research insights and QC/QA reviews.
• Design trusted LLM, RAG, and knowledge-search workflows with governance.
• Lead integration of scientific platforms and data pipelines.
• Architect and operate AWS cloud infra for AI/ML and analytics.
• Improve data quality, metadata, lineage, and observability.
• Collaborate across Research, Clinical, Data Science, IT, and BI.
• Provide senior technical leadership and roadmap input.
