Job summary

  • Offer legal counsel to a global workforce and partner with Employee Relations and People teams
  • Collaborate with Employment Legal Team and People Team to ensure compliance across jurisdictions
  • Develop and deliver training to managers and employees; present confidently in public settings

Lyft is looking for a bright, pragmatic, and self-motivated employment attorney with 4+ years of employment counseling and litigation experience to join our growing global Legal team. The ideal candidate will leverage their prior law firm and/or in-house experience to provide thoughtful, timely, practical and business-minded legal advice primarily to the professionals on Lyft's Employee Relations and People teams across the globe. You must have experience litigating and/or counseling on compliance with federal and state anti-discrimination/harassment/retaliation laws, preferably including analysis of issues under California law. Prior in-house or seconded technology company experience is preferred but not required. The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial and resourceful self-starter, comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, excellent at building strong relationships and interested in learning more about supporting a global workforce.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide pragmatic day-to-day employment advice and counseling on a broad range of employment issues in order to balance business impact and legal risk including HR practices, performance management, terminations, leaves of absence, investigations, and employee accommodations.
  • Investigate pre-litigation and litigation matters. Develop and implement strategies for early resolution (as appropriate) and work with outside counsel as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance and Interpret policies and procedures, incorporating knowledge of state and federal employment laws (e.g., FMLA, ADA, FLSA, NLRA, and Title VII and equivalent state and international laws).
  • Provide legal counsel and support to a global workforce.
  • Partner closely with Lyft's Employee Relations and People team professionals on employee complaints and investigations, performance management, and accommodations.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Employment Legal Team and People Team to develop strong processes to ensure compliance with applicable state, federal and local laws.
  • Develop and deliver training to managers and employees – candidates must be comfortable with public speaking.
  • Monitor important developments in employment law in jurisdictions across the country and internationally, striving to spot trends in their infancy.
  • Work and build trust with cross-functional partners from teams across the Legal Department and the Company.
  • Travel from time-to-time as necessary to service internal clients; develop cross-office relationships; and attend legal proceedings/negotiations.
Experience:
  • 4+ years practicing employment law at a leading law firm and/or in-house, with experience and/or interest in advice and counseling
  • Prior in-house experience and expertise supporting a global workforce is a plus but not required.
  • Active and in good standing with a State Bar and eligible to practice in the relevant jurisdiction where you are located.
  • J.D. from a top-tier law school
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities, judgment, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Adept at thinking creatively (and strategically!) on your feet, conveying grace under pressure, and simultaneously managing complex workloads, multiple client demands, and shifting priorities all while instilling confidence
  • Resourceful self-starter and have a passion for results. Embody Lyft's culture, and operate with high standards and ethics

This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule following the establishment of a Lyft office in Nashville - Team Members will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Additionally, hybrid roles have the flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year. #Hybrid

The expected base pay range for this position in the Nashville area is $118,080-$147,600, not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location.
