Job summary

Georgia Farm Bureau in Macon, GA seeks an underwriting professional to manage homeowners and related policies. You will determine acceptability of new business, changes and renewals within your authority and ensure data accuracy for the homeowners/mobile home book of business.

You will review amendments, communicate decisions to agents and insureds, and perform data entry and bulk underwriting tasks. Strong attention to detail and clear communication are essential.

Qualifications

  • College degree or insurance designation required.
  • 1 year insurance underwriting, claims, or sales; or 3–5 years underwriting experience.
  • Continued education in risk management preferred.
  • Completion of related insurance courses preferred.

Job description

  • Determine acceptability of system-referred New Business, Change Requests and Renewals within level of authority.
  • Ensure accurate data for the Homeowner/Mobile home book of business.
  • Review amendments to existing policies for acceptance, modification, or declination.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions to agents, insureds, and others in a manner which will promote positive working relationships.
  • Enter specialized data.
  • Underwrite and process bulk changes.
  • Recommend termination of existing accounts when appropriate, or after all other recommendations for modification have failed or been refused. Determine whether risks should be forwarded to Brokerage.
  • Productivity/volume of work.
  • Quality of work output and results.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES/REQUIREMENTS:
  • Assist in training other employees on the use of the Policy STAR/Policy PRO system as needed.
  • Participate in special projects & meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

The employee must be able to organize, prioritize work and manage time wisely; must have knowledge of office administration procedures and the ability to operate most standard office equipment. The employee must pay attention to detail in composing and proofing materials. Must be self-motivated with initiative and ability to make sound underwriting decisions and accept responsibility for those decisions. Be flexible to respond to unexpected situations that require immediate attention. A high level of confidentiality is to be maintained by the employee. Must have excellent people skills such as diplomacy, tact, patience, good listener and communicator.

QUALIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • College degree or insurance related designation and a minimum of one year insurance experience required in underwriting, claims, or sales or 3-5 years’ of experience in Underwriting required.
  • Continued involvement in professional continued education preferred.
  • Completion of Introduction to Risk Management & Insurance, or higher-level course is preferred.
Language Skills:

Must be able to read, analyze and interpret procedures, regulations, instructions, manuals, and other documents as required. Excellent telephone, public relations and oral/written communication skills are required.

Reasoning Skills:

Must be able to resolve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

Must possess basic skills with personal computer, experience with Windows, and Microsoft Office Suite and internet.
