Responsibilities

• Participating in all phases of commercial litigation, including discovery, depositions, motion practice, hearings, and trial preparation.
• Communicating directly with clients, opposing counsel, and other professionals.
• Managing matters and assignments with supervision while developing independence and responsibility.

Brockwell Smith LLC, a dynamic boutique, full-service business law firm in Birmingham, Alabama, is seeking an Associate Attorney to join our practice. We are seeking a driven, motivated, and detail-oriented attorney who is interested in developing a broad and sophisticated business law practice. Our firm represents businesses, business owners, and individuals in a wide range of matters, including business and commercial litigation, corporate and transactional matters, contracts, real estate, and other business-related matters.

This position provides an opportunity to gain meaningful, hands‑on experience in both litigation and transactional work, interact directly with clients, and assume increasing responsibility for significant matters. The successful candidate will work closely with experienced attorneys and the firm's founders in an environment that values excellent work, sound judgment, responsiveness, and practical solutions for our clients.

Responsibilities

Depending on experience and the needs of particular matters, responsibilities may include:

• Drafting and reviewing contracts, corporate documents, leases, and other business agreements
• Assisting clients with corporate, transactional, and general business matters
• Conducting legal research and preparing memoranda, pleadings, motions, briefs, and other court filings
• Participating in all phases of commercial litigation, including discovery, depositions, motion practice, hearings, and trial preparation
• Communicating directly with clients, opposing counsel, and other professionals
• Managing matters and assignments with appropriate supervision while developing increasing independence and responsibility

Qualifications

• Active license to practice law in Alabama required
• Excellent legal research, analytical, writing, and communication skills
• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work
• Self‑motivated, dependable, and capable of managing multiple matters and deadlines
• Genuine interest in business law, including both business transactions and litigation
• Sound professional judgment and a client‑focused approachPrivate practice experience preferred, but not required
