Job description

We have partnered with an established and growing California litigation firm that is actively hiring Associate Attorneys to join its busy insurance defense and public entity defense practice. The firm has a strong litigation-focused team and is continuing to grow. This is an excellent opportunity for an Attorney who genuinely wants to build or deepen a career in civil litigation, with meaningful exposure to hearings, depositions, motion practice and case strategy from the outset. The practice represents insurance carriers, insureds, public entities and other organisations in a broad range of civil litigation matters throughout California.

Why Consider This Opportunity?
Role

This is not a role where an associate simply researches and drafts from the sidelines. Attorneys are given hands-on litigation exposure early, including participation in court hearings and depositions. Depending on experience, the successful attorney can expect to:

  • Appear in state and federal courts throughout California.
  • Participate in hearings and depositions shortly after joining.
  • Conduct legal research and develop substantive legal analysis.
  • Draft motions, discovery responses, pleadings, memoranda and other litigation documents.
  • Assist with preparation for hearings, depositions, mediations and other litigation events.
  • Contribute to case strategy and the analytical development of matters.
  • Work directly with experienced trial attorneys while developing greater responsibility and independence.
  • Manage and meet the firm's billable-hour expectations.

The Firm Is Open To Attorneys Across a Broad Range Of Experience Levels, From Newer Attorneys Through Highly Experienced Litigators. The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • An active California State Bar licence and good standing.
  • A genuine interest in civil litigation and trial work.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • The ability to analyse complex legal and factual issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with trial attorneys and the broader team.
  • A willingness to appear in court and participate in depositions.
  • The ability to manage a litigation caseload and meet billing expectations.
Prior insurance or public entity defense experience is valuable, but attorneys from other litigation backgrounds may also be considered depending on their overall experience and interest in transitioning into defense work.
Billable Hours -

The current billing expectation is approximately 165 hours per month, equivalent to approximately 1,980 hours annually.

Location & Remote Flexibility

The firm is open to remote attorneys located anywhere in California. That said, the firm would prefer someone who can work from the Fresno office, particularly where the candidate is within reasonable commuting distance. Attorneys seeking a fully remote arrangement may still be considered if their experience and overall fit are strong.

Compensation

- $110,000 - $300,000 base salary, with compensation determined primarily by the attorney's experience, litigation background and overall qualifications. The firm is open to considering multiple experience levels and may have the capacity to hire more than one attorney as the practice continues to grow.

Benefits
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • 401(k) matching
  • Paid time off
  • Potential bonus compensation
  • Full-time employment
What Makes This Opportunity Different? -

For an attorney who wants real litigation responsibility rather than a purely desk-based associate role, this opportunity offers immediate exposure to hearings, depositions and substantive case development. The combination of a growing litigation practice, a broad experience range, California-wide remote flexibility and direct courtroom exposure makes this an attractive opportunity for both developing litigators and experienced attorneys looking for a stronger platform.
