JOB SUMMARY

The Tangerine Press Associate Art Director manages a portion of the creative direction and development of Scholastic Book Fair’s and Club’s product lines, such as nonfiction books, activity kits, posters, and stationery and school supplies, from start to finish. This associate leads and mentors direct reports and contractors, and is responsible for an assortment of product projects each season to design and create the most exciting, kid-friendly products in the market.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. In partnership with the Art Director, manage all creative initiatives and development of non-book products created by Tangerine Press. Track product development and keep the Art Director and larger Tangerine Press team informed of production issues, design challenges, and progress.
  2. Direct the design and production of a variety of projects each season, including nonfiction books, activity kits, posters, stationery and school supplies, and product packaging.
  3. Manage and mentor direct report(s) on the Design Team: meet regularly to review projects’ statuses, provide support, and develop their skills.
  4. Collaborate across Tangerine Press teams to establish product development schedules; participate in weekly product update meetings with editorial and production, as well as in smaller weekly Design Team staff meetings to surface opportunities, problem-solve, and meet due dates, quality, budget, and safety requirements.
  5. Ensure company branding and image standards are adhered to, including following processes for media licensing images and fonts.
  6. Engage in pre-flighting and packaging files for print, working with vendors through sample reviews until products are approved and completed.
  7. Make recommendations to drive innovation and improve products and work processes.
  8. Ensure timely archival of files for all completed projects, and upload product photos each season.

Qualifications

  1. Minimum 7 years’ design experience with an art department in publishing, packaging, toy, or children’s businesses. Publishing and print experience preferred.
  2. Thorough knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  3. A portfolio demonstrating a wide variety of design work, layout, typography, and Adobe Creative Suite skills.
  4. Knowledge of printing processes from publishing, toy, or children’s product industries.
  5. Highly organized with strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  6. Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and thrive in a remote environment.
  7. Ability to conceptualize ideas, sketch, and understand 3D packaging, including cardboard display boxes.
  8. BFA or similar degree, or certification in Graphic Design or related field is a plus.
  9. Knowledge of Adobe Workfront and Microsoft PowerPoint is a plus.
