Job summary

Renesas Electronics Corporation in the United States is seeking a junior engineer/new college graduate for an Application Engineering role focused on analog and mixed-signal products, plus software/firmware development. You’ll work with Marketing and Apps Engineering to define, design, and release reference designs and application demos.

You’ll collaborate on system-level boards, GUI development, and documentation, with mentoring from a senior engineer.

Job Description

Junior engineer or New College Grad (NCG) for Application Engineering position with focus on analog and mixed signal products as well as software / firmware development for position in HiRel product group. The primary function will be to work with our Marketing and Applications Engineering team to define, design and release analog and mixed signal products as well as assist our team with software and firmware development for our analog and mixed signal products. You will be part of an engineering team that is also responsible for defining system level reference design boards for our customers. The engineer will work under the guidance and mentoring of a senior Application Engineer. Programming experience with Python, Java, and/or C languages as well as knowledge of Verilog coding with FPGAs desired.

1. Definition and Design of the Application Demo boards and System Level reference designs with collaboration from Apps and Marketing for satellites power systems.
2. Schematic design, layout and BOM of the boards (Altium EDA is necessary). The candidate is eventually required to do PCB layouts.
3. Working with our software development group to design and test the system GUI’s.
4. Characterization and documentation of reference design electrical performance.
5. Publication of User Manual/Design Guide and working with the build group to get the board released into production.
6. Support of FAE or Marketing / Sales to help refine their application needs into deliverable reference designs to showcase solution performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Board Design and Validation of Performance (30-40% of time)

Time spent planning and conceptualizing/block level architecture for the reference design. Validate the performance of the reference designs / demo boards. Prepare validation plan and compile validation reports post bench testing/characterization. You will be expected to keep accurate lab notes (software of your choice) and document any test procedures for future reference. On simpler reference designs, you will be required to provide the test house with a test requirement document to enable them to verify the operation of the board before being placed in stock. On more complicated reference designs, you will be required to do the verification of the operation before the boards are put in stock.

Documentation (30% of time):

Generate User’s Guide that provide a clear explanation of the purpose of the reference design and the advantages it brings to the customer. User Guides should also include schematic of board, picture of board, performance of key specs with test conditions and any software information. It is important to document how the boards were tested in the User’s Guide, so the customer can reproduce our results. If required, will be expected to publish customers responses, and possible Articles. FrameMaker is our publishing software for our User Guides thus familiarity with this software is preferred.

Customer Support (20% of time):

You will work with marketing and sales to facilitate the design-in of our products as well as providing technical assistance to address customer questions and analyze field returns. This will include assisting with software development for our evaluation platforms. You will train Field Application Engineers on products and demonstrations systems to enhance sales channel effectiveness.

Design-in Activities (10-20%)

You will work with marketing and sales to facilitate the design-in of our products and answer customer questions about the reference designs. You will train Field Application Engineers on the operation of the boards to enhance sales channel effectiveness.

• Candidate must possess a minimum bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineering.
• Candidate should be self-motivated and conscientious.
• Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Candidate must have good presentation skills.
• Candidate should have a good knowledge of analog / mixed signal design and lab troubleshooting skills.
• Candidate must understand and follow industry standards of test for analog /mixed signal IC devices.

Required Skills:

• 0-3 Years in Applications and/or Systems Engineering role in Analog IC Development or Circuit Design Industry.
• Experience in Schematic/Layout design tools for Analog Mixed Signal, Power Management, MCU, FPGA, and DDR Memory in system level applications.
• Proficient with electronic bench lab equipment (power supplies, function generators, multi-meters, oscilloscopes).
• Experience in building system level applications involving FPGA/ASIC, MCU, DDR memory interface using Verilog a plus.
• Familiar with Microsoft Office (Excel, Power Point).
• Experience with using Schematic/Layout EDA software (ie. Altium) is necessary.
• Analog Mixed Signal products necessary.
• Analog Mixed Signal experience preferred.
• Previous experience working on power systems on satellites and understanding the power needs of satellite systems is very desirable.
• Past satellite system design a plus.
• Experience modeling circuits (IBIS, SPICE, and/or SIMPLIS) is a plus.
• Experience writing programming code (ie. Python) to automate lab bench equipment in GBIP/USB communication a plus.
• Experience with programming in Java, C, or similar language preferred.
• Knowledge of I2C/SPI communication protocols are a plus.
