Job summary

Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Austin is seeking an Assistive Technology Teacher to support learners with visual impairments and related needs. You will employ ISTE-aligned digital teaching methods and integrate assistive technology to promote accessible learning across subjects.

You will collaborate with the Instructional Technology Coordinator and other educators to plan staff development, evaluate and order AT equipment, and contribute to student assessments and ARD

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university (transcripts required)
• Special Education EC-12, Technology Applications or Computer Science teaching certification
• If certified, must obtain Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments certification; if not certified, willing to obtain training in AT services

Responsibilities

• Teaches assistive technology concepts for students with visual impairments, additional impairments, and Deafblind.
• Models ISTE-aligned digital teaching methods to promote active learning through technology integration.
• Collaborates with staff to plan and provide staff development on assistive and instructional technology.
• Serves as an AT SME by consulting with students and staff on evaluation, selection, training, and support of AT.
• Orders equipment for students and teachers; completes AT Evaluations and Reports.
• Participates in ARD committees as needed and supports instruction and problem-solving across settings.
• Engages with teachers to plan and implement instructional programs and address student needs.
• Assesses student needs to set instructional goals; uses diverse teaching strategies to accommodate learning styles.
• Adheres to policies and pursues ongoing professional growth.
• Regular attendance and compliance with all agency policies.

• Teaches students concepts related to assistive technology applications and equipment for students with visual impairments, additional impairments and students who are Deafblind.
• Effectively models and promotes 21 st Century digital teaching methods and research-based strategies aligned with International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards that encourage active student learning through the integration of technology.
• May teach courses in Technology Applications.
• Collaborates with Instructional Technology Coordinator and other technology teachers to plan and provide staff development on assistive and instructional technology applications.
• Serves as an assistive technology subject matter expert (SME) for the school community by consulting with and supporting students and staff regarding the evaluation, selection, training, implementation, and support of assistive technology.
• Collaborates with Instructional Technology Coordinator and other technology teachers to order equipment for students and teachers.
• Completes Assistive Technology Evaluations and Reports for assigned students.
• May serve as the Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments required member of a student’s Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee and perform associated duties.
• Cooperates with other teachers in planning and implementing the instructional program for the students assigned. Works with the Instructional Technology Coordinator and other team members in identifying and solving problems related to his/her students in school, dormitory, and community environments.
• Diagnoses and assesses student needs to determine instructional goals and objectives. Utilizes effective teaching techniques and classroom strategies to accommodate the various learning styles and modes of his/her student.
• Performs assignments effectively relating to all department and school policies and procedures. Utilizes professional classroom management techniques to assist students in learning. Continues professional growth and development.
• Attends work regularly in accordance with TSBVI leave policy.
• Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
• Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university (Original college or university transcript(s) required at time of hiring)
• Must have Special Education EC-12, Technology Applications or Computer Science teaching certification
• If a certified teacher, must have or be willing to obtain Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments teaching certification within a specified period of time; if not a certified teacher, must be willing to obtain additional training in providing assistive technology services to students with visual impairments as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• ACVREP Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist, RESNA Assistive Technology Professional, or CSUN Assistive Technology Applications certification or other appropriate assistive technology certification.
