Job summary

The City of Winston-Salem is seeking a skilled supervisor for traffic signs, markings, and related control devices. Under immediate supervision, you will plan, organize, and oversee crew work in construction, installation, maintenance and repair.

You will interpret blueprints, apply safety procedures, and use basic office software to document activities. This role requires a high school diploma with considerable journeyman traffic control experience and NC CDL-B certification by position.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; journeyman experience in traffic control preferred.
• Ability to interpret blueprints and apply safety precautions for traffic control work.
• Basic computer skills including Word, Excel and work management.

Responsibilities

• Plan and organize crew assignments for traffic signs, markings and related devices.
• Supervise and review work of crews in maintenance and repair of traffic control devices.
• Assist and instruct employees in installation, operation and maintenance; answer trouble calls; may perform night standby duties; keep records and manage inventory.

Description

Under immediate supervision, performs difficult technical and supervisory work pertaining to the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signs, traffic markings, and related traffic control devices; does related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Plans and organizes crew assignments for the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signs, traffic markings, and related traffic control devices. Supervises and reviews work of crews in the maintenance and repair of a variety of traffic control devices. Assists and instructs employees in the proper installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signs, traffic markings, and traffic control devices, etc. Answers trouble calls for field repairs; may be assigned to night standby duty for emergency repairs; keeps records, makes reports, purchase supplies, and manages inventory.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and considerable journeyman experience in specialized traffic control work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Considerable experience of the installation, operation and maintenance of traffic signs, traffic markings, related traffic control devices and various types of equipment. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade; ability to instruct other employees in the operation, maintenance and repair of traffic control devices and various traffic equipment; ability to interpret blueprints and to apply this knowledge to the installation of traffic control devices and markings, operation and repair of traffic control equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, basic computer skills with knowledge of word, excel, and work management.

Supplemental Information

Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class B. Certified or ability to obtain certification within 1 year of employment in work zone traffic control that meets the standards of the North Carolina Department of Transportation
