Job summary

The City of Winston-Salem is seeking a semi-skilled laborer supervisor to lead a small crew in heavy manual labor tasks, including construction, maintenance and road work. You will instruct workers, operate hand tools and machinery, and monitor progress while keeping records.

The role requires endurance for long 12-hour shifts in varying weather and the ability to manage outdoor work sites. Qualified candidates typically have a high school diploma or equivalent and some construction experience;

• Willing to work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week in all weather
• Must obtain NC CDL within 1 year of hire

Under immediate supervision, performs responsible semi-skilled work leading a small crew engaged in a variety of heavy manual laboring work, including construction, maintenance and road working related work as required.

Under immediate supervision, performs responsible semi-skilled work leading a small crew engaged in a variety of heavy manual laboring work, including construction, maintenance and road working related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Assigns works and gives specific instruction to semi-skilled and unskilled workers performing a wide variety of tasks, including using hand tools, digging, swinging a sledgehammer, operating pneumatic and gas-powered tools & machinery, loading and unloading materials and/or performing general maintenance and construction work.

This position will also be knowledgeable with various line stripping material and machinery in addition to sign installation standards. Supervises other laboring work and semi-skilled tasks; reviews work in progress and upon completion will keep records.

Requirements

Typical Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduate and some experience in construction and/or maintenance work.

Must be able to work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week during any inclement weather.

Possession of a valid North Carolina Class Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) upon hire or ability to obtain within (1) year of hire.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift or move up to 50lbs and maneuver up to 1 mile. Must be able to climb and to operate listed equipment and have to ability to work with small and large objects; must possess good communication skills. This position will work outdoors and may be exposed to changing weather, adverse smells and sights, loud sounds and repetitive operations and long periods of standing/sitting in addition to sign installation standards.
