Job description

As of January 1st, 2025, the new salary range will be $36,159-$54,237.

Positions Available

The Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy (TCA) is hiring Youth Program Education Assistants (Assistant Team Leaders) in two locations:

  • Salemburg, Sampson County
  • New London, Stanly County

These positions involve supervising cadets 24/7 during the residential phase, ensuring safety, accountability, and training. Responsibilities include:

  1. Mentoring, advising, counseling, and teaching cadets about program standards and expectations.
  2. Identifying and correcting behaviors that could lead to issues.
  3. Interacting with cadets and serving as first-line supervisors, conducting inspections, overseeing physical fitness, providing basic first aid, and supervising off-site activities like community service, job fairs, and training.
  4. Documenting incidents and briefing staff after shifts.
  5. Initiating counseling and incident reports as needed.
  6. Performing physical fitness tasks such as marching, running, push-ups, sit-ups, calisthenics, and prolonged standing.

This is a full-time position (40 hours/week) with Benefits.

Work Schedule

Employees work approximately 16 days per month and have 14 days off, including holidays and weekends unless the academy is closed. Shifts are:

  • 1st Shift: 6am to 7pm (with 1-hour lunch/break)
  • 2nd Shift: 10am to 11pm (with 1-hour lunch/break)
  • 3rd Shift: 6pm to 7am (with 1-hour lunch/break)

Salary and Qualifications

The salary grade is MH05. Current state employees are encouraged to apply; salary will be adjusted based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity, potentially resulting in a pay increase.

Applicants must meet the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) listed, including experience with youth or adults, documentation skills, and group leadership. Education and experience requirements include:

  • Associate's degree in human services or related field, OR
  • High school/GED with two years of related experience, OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional requirements include completing training, obtaining a CDL with passenger endorsement, and passing a background check.
