Job description

The Center for the Study of Human Health (CSHH) at Emory University is a cross-disciplinary and rapidly growing program that seeks an Assistant Teaching Professor in Health, Wellbeing and Humanities to begin the Fall semester of 2027. CSHH is an multidisciplinary liberal arts program encompassing innovative courses and scholarly endeavors with broad perspectives on health and the human condition through a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Human Health, a joint major in Economics and Health, and minors in Predictive Health, Global Health, Culture & Society, Nutrition Science, and Predictive Health. We also offer a Health Innovation Concentration in collaboration with Goizueta Business School.

We seek a teacher-scholar focused on health and humanities from across any of the following areas and approaches: philosophy, bioethics, literature, languages, arts, or public health. Geographic area of work is open. Successful applicants must have experience using evidence to evaluate the human experience of health through historical, social, and cultural perspectives, [as well as/or] literary and artistic explorations of health.

Experience teaching innovative, evidence-based courses in human health-related disciplines at the undergraduate level is necessary. In addition to electives in their area of expertise, candidates should be able to contribute to our teaching program in: bioethics, philosophical traditions, cross-cultural perceptions of health and wellbeing, emerging biotechnologies, and health narratives. Successful candidates should demonstrate the use of methods and pedagogies rooted in the humanities to examine the intersections of health and the human condition. A history of research and mentoring students outside the classroom is required.

This is a full‑time, teaching‑track position with a course load of five courses per academic year, including both large lecture courses and small seminars. In addition, successful applicants will be expected to mentor and advise students outside the classroom. The initial appointment will be for a period of three years with renewals and promotions possible within the teaching‑track system, as detailed in the Emory College of Arts and Sciences Guidelines for Appointment of Teaching-Track Faculty (http://college.emory.edu/faculty/faculty/promotion-teaching-track.html).

Emory is an equal opportunity employer, and qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, protected veteran status or other characteristics protected by state or federal law.

The Center for the Study of Human Health (CSHH) at Emory University recognizes that a holistic, multidisciplinary understanding of health requires a diverse community of scholars. We believe that lived experiences profoundly shape academic insight, teaching excellence, and transformative health research. In alignment with Emory’s affirmative action commitments and our Center’s focus on human well‑being, we explicitly welcome and encourage applications from individuals with disabilities and protected veterans.

We value the unique perspectives that disabled scholars and veteran academics bring to the study of health equity, human resilience, structural health barriers, and community-based health interventions. CSHH is dedicated to building an inclusive intellectual home where your background is viewed as a distinct asset to our faculty, our curriculum, and our students.

Recognizing Diverse Academic Pathways

We understand that traditional academic metrics do not always capture the full scope of a scholar's potential. CSHH actively values non‑traditional career trajectories and portfolios. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Periods of military service or deployment that may have caused non-linear publication timelines.
  • Lived experiences with disability or chronic conditions that shape unique research methodologies or pedagogical approaches.
  • Extensive leadership, operational, or field‑health execution experience gained in military or community‑based settings.
Our Commitment to Accessibility and Support
