Oak Hill is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic Assistant Teacher I (ATI) to provide hands-on classroom support to individuals with Developmental and other Disabilities. This role involves inspiring others, making a life-changing impact, and achieving professional growth and personal fulfillment. Oak Hill partners with people with disabilities to provide services promoting independence, education, health, and dignity. The role will help expand Oak Hill’s ability to identify and address diverse community needs. We are committed to empowering our staff through professional development, tuition reimbursement, and career pathways.

The Substitute Assistant Teacher at Oak Hill’s New Hartford location is required to work an average of 15 hours per month. Responsibilities include supporting Special Education Teachers, preparing lessons, teaching students, assisting with behavior management, and setting up classroom materials. Applicants with no experience and those interested in entering the education or direct care field, or seeking a career change, are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least age 18
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A Public Service license with a V endorsement is required during initial employment, facilitated through Oak Hill. The V endorsement is necessary for operating a student transportation vehicle, including transporting special education students. Applicants or holders of a public passenger endorsement must have an acceptable driving record.

This is a union position with pay ranging from $18.50 to $19.40 per hour, depending on shift.

Responsibilities
  • Providing information for program maintenance and evaluation, maintaining records electronically
  • Ensuring participants’ cleanliness, comfort, and well-being; supporting self-help and daily living skills
  • Preparing materials for activities and projects
  • Monitoring health by encouraging medication self-administration, administering medications, and observing behavioral or physical changes
  • Applying Emergency First Aid and CPR procedures as needed
  • Maintaining confidentiality and adhering to policies protecting participant information
