Program Overview

The Child Center of NY offers a nationally accredited Early Head Start program for children from birth to age three. The program provides extensive child development and family support services to low-income families, including parenting education and promoting positive parent-child relationships. It focuses on the overall well-being of children, including physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and language development. The program collaborates with Northwell Health and Strong Children Wellness, offering home-based services in Astoria, Corona, and Woodside, along with a center-based classroom for 2-year-olds in Manhattan.

Position Summary

The Assistant Teacher's primary responsibility is to support the lead teacher in creating a responsive, age-appropriate environment that fosters the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of children.

Essential Functions
  • Perform duties with a strong understanding of Head Start Program Performance Standards, as well as local, state, and federal guidelines. Apply Developmentally Appropriate Practices effectively.
  • Assist in facilitating children's activities, including daily routines, field trips, and selecting classroom equipment and materials aligned with Early Childhood best practices as defined by NAEYC, NYS Quality Stars (QRIS), NYS Common Core, NYS Early Learning Framework, and Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework.
  • Assist in maintaining comprehensive, ongoing portfolio assessments for each child, including observations, developmental, and social-emotional assessments.
  • Help ensure a safe and healthy classroom environment. Maintain and properly store classroom equipment, furniture, materials, and supplies.
  • Support the integration and implementation of children's IEPs (Individual Education Plans) or IFSPs (Individual Family Service Plans) into lesson plans for individualized outcomes.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bilingual skills preferred in Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Bengali, or other languages, depending on client needs.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to plan and execute assignments independently.
  • Ability to prioritize, adhere to timelines, and multi-task.
