Job summary

1199SEIU Child Care Corporation in New York City is seeking an Assistant Teacher to support the Head Teacher in creating and maintaining a nurturing classroom environment. You will help supervise children, assist with daily activities, and ensure safety and well-being.

This permanent, full-time role requires a High School Diploma or GED, an Assistant Teacher Certification and CDA, strong communication skills, and knowledge of early childhood development.

Qualifications

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED; some college coursework preferred.
  • Assistant Teacher Certification and a minimum of two years teaching or child care for ages 2–5.
  • CDA certification.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - oral, written, and listening.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to navigate online assessment tools.
  • Knowledge of developmental milestones and best practices in Early Childhood Education Pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Practices and Guidelines.
  • Bilingual a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Head Teacher in preparing and maintaining the prepared environment.
  • Reports incidents promptly with written details and notifies the Director.
  • Attends meetings as requested.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents to provide security for children.
  • Assists in planning and implementing center projects and programs.
  • Supervises the classroom and supports individuals and small groups of children.
  • Oversees safety and well-being of children in all areas and during fire drills.
  • Performs additional duties and projects as assigned by management.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the Head Teacher in preparing and maintaining the prepared environment.
  • Reports any incident or accident immediately. Prepares a written report stating date, time, nature of the incident or accident, and action taken. Responsible for promptly reporting the incident or accident to the Director.
  • Attends meetings as requested.
  • Notifies the Head Teacher immediately of personal difficulties related to children, parents, and staff.
  • Assists in planning and implementing other center projects and programs assigned by the Head Teacher or Director.
  • Utilizes positive phrasing of directives when with children.
  • Works with individual and small groups of children as directed by the Head Teacher.
  • Supervises the classroom as directed by the Head Teacher.
  • Responsible for the safety and well-being of children at all times, in the classroom and on the playgrounds.
  • Supervises children in the execution of fire drills.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents to give them a feeling of security in leaving their children at the center.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned by management
Qualifications
  • Must have a High School Diploma or (GED) required. Some college-level coursework in Education and/or applicable college degree preferred
  • Must have an Assistant Teacher Certification and a minimum of two (2) years teaching and/or providing child care for young children (ages 2-5 years old)
  • Child Development Associate (CDA)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - oral, written, and listening
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); ability to navigate diverse online assessment tools
  • Knowledge of developmental milestones and Best Practices in Early Childhood Education Pedagogy
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Practices and Guidelines
  • Bilingual a plus
