Job summary

Walnut Creek Family YMCA in West Des Moines, IA is seeking an Assistance Swim Team Coach for evenings and weekends. You will plan, manage and direct swim teams and help ensure participant safety while providing positive instruction.

The role requires completing high school or equivalent, CPR/First Aid, Red Cross Swim Coach or Lifeguard training, and ongoing YMCA safety training. Prior competitive swimming or coaching experience is preferred, with a focus on inclusivity and teamwork.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions.
• Completion of high school or equivalent.
• Competitive swimming experience or knowledge required; competitive coaching experience preferred.
• Current Red Cross CPR-PR/AED/First Aid Certification OR equivalent – prior to starting.
• Child Abuse Prevention Training - prior to starting if hired, and maintained annually.
• Training within first 30 days including Principles of YMCA Swimming and Diving.
• Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches or Lifeguard certification

Responsibilities

• Create an environment that welcomes all swimmers from varying levels.
• Assist in planning and directing team practices.
• Follow workouts provided by head coach.
• Attend team practices, meets, and coaches meetings.
• Assist in development of team events and lesson plans.
• Assist in coordinating team entry information.
• Ensure safety by enforcing policies and rules.
• Relate to participants professionally at all times.
• Know and demonstrate emergency procedures.
• Monitor equipment and report issues to supervisor.
• Respond to questions and concerns from participants and families.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• Support the YMCA mission and values.
