Job summary

Essel is seeking an experienced Assistant Superintendent to join our San Diego construction team. The role supports the Superintendent in daily field operations, ensuring projects stay on schedule, maintaining quality, and promoting a safe work environment.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years in commercial construction, experience with ground-up or TI projects, and strong reading of drawings and specifications.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience as an Assistant Superintendent, Foreman, or Lead Carpenter on commercial construction projects.
  • Experience with ground-up and/or tenant improvement (TI) projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Superintendent in managing day-to-day construction activities on active job sites.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel to ensure work is completed safely and on schedule.
  • Monitor project progress and help maintain the construction schedule.
  • Conduct daily job site walks to ensure quality workmanship and compliance with project plans and specifications.
  • Enforce OSHA safety standards and company safety policies.
  • Assist with inspections and coordinate with local building officials as needed.
  • Track deliveries, materials, and equipment to ensure work progresses without delays.
  • Help identify and resolve field issues before they impact the schedule.
  • Review drawings, specifications, and RFIs to ensure proper execution of work.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, site logs, and progress documentation.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager on scheduling, budgeting, and project updates.
  • Assist with punch list completion and project closeout activities.

  • Proficient with Procore, Bluebeam, or similar construction management software is preferred.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Valid California driver's license and reliable transportation.
