Job summary

Contra Costa Country Club in Pleasant Hill, CA is seeking a driven Assistant Golf Course Superintendent to lead daily maintenance with a 25+ person team, while developing toward a future superintendent role.

You will work with senior staff on agronomic planning, irrigation, and tournament prep, and participate in Green Committee activities. The position offers mentorship, seasonal scheduling, and a commitment to professional growth within Troon’s network.

Qualifications

• Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field.
• Experience in golf course maintenance leadership roles is preferred.
• California QAL/QAC or ability to obtain within six months.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of daily planning, scheduling, and execution of maintenance operations while leading 25+ team members.
• Assist with irrigation management, fertilizer and pesticide applications, cultural practices, tournament prep, and course setup.
• Develop and implement short- and long-term agronomic plans with senior staff.
• Attend local and national educational opportunities and participate in Green Committee meetings.

Responsibilities & Professional Development

As Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, you'll be entrusted with meaningful responsibility. Working alongside the Golf Course Superintendent and Co-Assistant Superintendent, you'll play a key role in leading the operation while gaining the experience needed to become a future Golf Course Superintendent.

Responsibilities and development opportunities include:

• Take ownership of the daily planning, scheduling, and execution of golf course maintenance operations while leading, mentoring, and developing 25+ team members in a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
• Assist with irrigation management, fertilizer and pesticide applications, cultural practices, tournament preparation, and course setup.
• Work directly with the Golf Course Superintendent and Co-Assistant Superintendent to develop and implement short- and long-term agronomic plans.
• Participate in Green Committee meetings.
• Gain exposure to budgeting, capital planning, and strategic decision-making.
• Take ownership of projects and contribute ideas that improve course conditions and departmental operations.
• Attend local and national educational opportunities, conferences, and industry events.
• Receive mentorship and increasing responsibility designed to prepare you for the next step in your career.

Schedule & Expectations

This is a leadership position within a year-round golf course operation, and the schedule reflects the seasonal demands of the profession.

• Rotating weekend schedule with the Golf Course Superintendent and Co-Assistant Superintendent.
• Summer months typically require 50-60 hours per week.
• During the remainder of the year, schedules generally average around 40 hours per week.
• Flexibility is expected during tournaments, special events, weather events, and periods of agronomic necessity.

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary: $80,000-$95,000 annually, commensurate with experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field.
• Experience as an Assistant Superintendent, Second Assistant Superintendent, Spray Technician, Foreman, or another golf course maintenance leadership role ready to take the next step.
• California Qualified Applicator License (QAL) or Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC), or the ability to obtain either within six months of hire.
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Passion for developing people and producing exceptional playing conditions.
