Job summary

Lancaster EMS is seeking a seasoned Paramedic Supervisor to lead assigned EMS units and provide quick paramedic response when needed. The role includes scheduling, QA follow-up, and administrative duties, with backfill during shortages and acting as shift supervisor in absence. Reports to the Shift Supervisor.

Ideal candidate has extensive EMS experience, paramedic certification, and ability to manage incident responses while ensuring safety and compliance across stations and vehicles.

Description

Under general supervision, is responsible for providing direct employee supervision for assigned units and provide paramedic quick response when necessary. Performs a variety of routine administrative duties to include production of the schedule, assist with FTO and QA follow-up and inspections as directed. Performs emergency medical patient care duties as necessary by providing medical care and transportation of the sick and injured during emergency runs. Required to backfill slots during shift shortages or emergency situations. Required to act in the capacity of shift Supervisor in his/her absence. Reports to the Shift Supervisor.

Examples of Duties


  • Provides direct employee supervision over assigned units to ensure compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.

  • Performs various supervisory duties which include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; allocating personnel; acting on employee problems; and recommending employee disciplinary action.

  • Ensures that all stations and vehicles are in proper working order.

  • Obtains and evaluates various paperwork and reports from each station including time sheets and additional EPCR paperwork as needed.

  • Gathers and delivers necessary supplies and materials to various stations as required/needed. Monitors daily unit inspections and controlled drug exchanges as needed.

  • Coordinates with the county maintenance shop for repairs as needed on units.

  • Provides general customer service support to those inquiring about services, expressing concerns and presenting complaints.

  • Performs emergency care duties as necessary by providing medical care, performing extrications as needed, and transportation of the sick and injured during emergency runs.

  • Performs general administrative work as required, including conducting and attending meetings, preparing reports and correspondence, reviewing correspondence and reports, copying and filing documents, conducting equipment and stock inventory counts, etc.

  • Keeps the Director and Operations Manager and/or Shift Supervisor informed of pertinent problems or complaints. May act as the EMS incident commander during large scale incidents until relieved.

  • Prepares and/or reviews a variety of reports and documents including maintenance records and reports, training records and reports, inspection forms, run reports, inventory records, incident / accident reports, checklists, logs, rescue reports, schedules, rosters, personnel records, performance appraisals, memos, correspondence, etc.; reviews all reports prepared by subordinates. Makes recommendations as appropriate.

  • Operates a computer, printer, two-way radio, telephone, calculator, copier, etc.

  • Uses medical supplies and instruments, special protective clothing, hand and power tools, etc.

  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Director, Operations Manager, other county department heads and employees, subordinates, other government agencies, municipal personnel, volunteers, EMS personnel of other jurisdictions, civic and community organizations, school personnel, students, business/property owners, sales representatives, news media, medical/hospital personnel, patients, insurance company representatives, and the general public.

  • Utilizes EMS scheduling software to cover shifts due to vacation, sickness, or other reasons; and the online incident management system to cover reported mechanical problems on vehicles and issues at stations, and to handle other incident reports as they occur.

  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

  • Staffs transport units during periods of shortages, call outs or high volumes as needed.

  • Performs additional job duties as requested by Director, Operations Manager or County Administration.


Typical Qualifications

Requires vocational or technical school Paramedic Certification, supplemented by 8 years of EMS experience with a minimum of 5 years at the Paramedic Certification Level with at least 1.5 years at Lancaster EMS. Must complete required course work and maintain required certifications, in ACLS, PALS, PHTLS/AMLS, BLS, EVOC/CEVO, Incident Command (700, 800, 100, 200) and pass SC EMS Management course within one year of selection or as soon as it is offered. Must possess appropriate, valid state driver's license. Must not be in a Probationary Period.
