Qualifications

Job description

Description Under limited supervision, supervises and maintains the operational readiness of EMS units on assigned shift. Work involves supervising subordinate staff, providing pre-hospital care to the critically injured or ill within the parameters of license/certification, preparing and maintaining EMS records and reports as required, and performing related work as assigned. Reports to the EMS Deputy Director.

Description Under limited supervision, supervises and maintains the operational readiness of EMS units on assigned shift. Work involves supervising subordinate staff, providing pre-hospital care to the critically injured or ill within the parameters of license/certification, preparing and maintaining EMS records and reports as required, and performing related work as assigned. Reports to the EMS Deputy Director.

Minimum Training And Experience
  • Stands by in readiness to respond to all emergencies during a 24-hour tour of duty; always ensures readiness by maintaining and resupplying materials necessary for the effective and timely response to emergencies.
  • Supervises staff through the chain of command; supervisory duties include instructing, planning and assigning work, reviewing work, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, selecting new employees, acting on employee problems, recommending and approving employee discipline and discharge as appropriate.
  • Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates performance and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.
  • Coordinates, schedules and assists with staff training opportunities.
  • Receives and reviews reports submitted by subordinates for completeness and accuracy.
  • Provides input and recommends staffing and equipment needs for budget planning purposes.
  • Writes, reviews and recommends changes to existing policies and procedures to ensure continuing efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
  • Inspects stations and crews to ensure compliance with policy and procedures; corrects deficiencies.
  • Coordinates routine and non-routine maintenance of the EMS vehicle fleet.
  • Provides inventory control and distribution of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Responds in emergency vehicles to emergency call locations; provides incident management for all complex situations; assesses individual emergency situations and analyzes need for further assistance; determines the most effective method of emergency treatment; provides advanced life support or other appropriate emergency treatment or intervention within the parameters of license/certification.
  • Administers drugs and performs other invasive procedures.
  • Notifies receiving hospital or physician of situation and/or patient condition; provides safe transport of the injured or ill to the emergency room for further assessment and/or treatment.
  • Maintains legal documentation of each request for response in patient care reporting computer program.
  • Participates in public education and community relations efforts.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.
  • Attends national, regional, state, and local training, conferences, and other meetings to remain knowledgeable of emergency medical service methods and administration.
  • Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as call reports, patient status reports, diagnostic medical device result records, policy and procedure updates, medical protocol updates, and various other reports and correspondence.
  • Remains available 24 hours per day, seven days per week, for emergency response.
  • Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as daily shift reports, patient care reports, incident reports, work order requests, and various other records, reports and general letters of correspondence.
  • Refers to laws, codes, regulations, medical guidelines, medical and technical manuals, policy and procedure manuals, publications and reference texts, maps, schedules, etc.
  • Operates quick response vehicles, ambulance and a variety of other specialized equipment, including CPAP device and ventilator, medical monitors, various communications devices, etc.; uses diagnostic and emergency medical supplies, basic mechanic\'s tools, pharmaceuticals, IV supplies, etc.; operates general office equipment such as a computer, printer, telephone, calculator, etc.; uses general office supplies and word/data processing software.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the supervisor, co-workers, other emergency response agencies, other County staff, hospital personnel, medical providers, patients, vendors and the public.
