GENERAL SUMMARY & SCOPE

The Assistant Services Manager (ASM) is responsible for leading through Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values to develop a high-performing team that consistently delivers sales growth in hair and skin services. The ASM supports the Experience Manager (EM) in leading a team of stylists and estheticians, and is accountable for all aspects of the services business, including services and merchandise sales, events around hair and skin, guest satisfaction, and operational excellence. The ASM also works behind the chair providing services to guests in the salon. This leader drives their business through a focus on performance, people, and process, requiring a drive for results, a passion for the beauty industry, exceptional guest service, leadership and influence skills, and the ability to learn and teach service techniques and product knowledge.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The ASM champions Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values, demonstrating them consistently through the following duties and responsibilities, along with other assigned projects:

Performance
  • Perform salon hair services, makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations with guests.
  • Achieve individual productivity goals weekly.
  • Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed store goals related to service and merchandise sales, guest loyalty, payroll, omni-channel, and retail shrink.
  • Drive profitability through operational excellence, sales growth, and expense management.
  • Support planning and execution of service events to enhance guest experience, foster brand partner collaboration, and meet sales and payroll targets.
  • Regularly review financial and operational reports, including service visits and audits, and react promptly.
  • Address underperformance in service sales with strategies utilizing company tools and resources.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, products, and services to better serve guests.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and hold team accountable to attendance policies.
People
  • Support attraction, hiring, and retention of diverse top talent, using various methods including social media.
  • Build an engaged team embodying the Ulta Beauty brand through collaboration, communication, and coaching.
  • Train and develop service professionals, providing feedback and coaching.
  • Create an inclusive environment that promotes growth and engagement.
  • Support professional development, including training, succession planning, and individual growth plans.
  • Build professional relationships with peers and brand partners to achieve sales and service goals.
  • Promote service excellence culture among leadership by sharing best practices and establishing priorities.
Process
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Review and respond to company communications timely.
  • Enforce dress code and manage store inventory and supply ordering within budget.
  • Use task management tools to prioritize and execute store tasks.
  • Protect assets and minimize loss through standards and procedures.
  • Support continuous improvement and technology adoption.
  • Assist in scheduling to optimize traffic and productivity.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Cosmetology school graduate
  • Cosmetology license and/or management license as required by state law

Experience

  • 2–3+ years relevant salon management or similar experience
  • Knowledge of state cosmetology regulations and hiring requirements
  • Experience with financial management, sales, reporting, payroll, and expense control
  • Leadership experience in attracting, developing, and motivating talent

Skills

  • Proficiency in salon techniques and aptitude to develop skills across all service categories
  • Proficient with technology (POS, Microsoft Office, Apple devices)
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and adaptability skills
SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Flexible full-time schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Participation in corporate meetings and conferences
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Mobility throughout the store during shifts
  • Frequent standing, bending, reaching, twisting
  • Ability to lift/move up to 10 lbs.
  • Use of computers, phones, and office supplies
