The Town of Chapel Hill invites applications for an Assistant Recreation Supervisor at the Hargraves Community Center. The role supports daily programming and youth/teen activities, with emphasis on afterschool and community events.

The department is currently recruiting for an Assistant Recreation Supervisor at the Hargraves Community Center.
Hargraves Community Center has always been a place built of, by, and for Chapel Hill’s Black community. The formation of a community‑led recreation center was an important act of self‑determination for that community and laid the foundation for the local direct‑action movement of the 1960s. Hargraves is a historic landmark on the North Carolina Civil Rights Trail for the center’s rich history – from its earliest days housing the B‑1 Navy Band during WWII, to the first meeting of our local NAACP chapter in 1947, to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s visit to Chapel Hill, to the Freedom Schools of the 1960s. Today, Hargraves continues to be a site for the community to gather, socialize, recreate, and engage in the ongoing struggle for social justice.
The purpose of this position is to assist with the daily programming and management of the Hargraves Community Center, Nate Davis Senior Gymnasium, youth and teen programming, afterschool, and community events. This is accomplished by planning, development and implementing and evaluating programs and events for all ages in the community, marketing programs and events, assisting with maintaining section budget, writing contracts and placing purchase orders, and providing administrative duties. Other duties include assisting with recruiting, interviewing, recommending for hire, training of staff, approves and assigns work schedules.
This position requires supervising and monitoring the performance of other employees.
The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee may be required perform tasks that require pushing, pulling, sitting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, bending, twisting, exposure to mechanical or electrical hazard, inclement weather, outdoor cold and heat and loud noises. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
The work is performed either indoors or outdoors depending on the tasks performed.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience
Two or more years’ experience working in parks and recreation in the areas of community/recreation centers, youth programming and teen programming, and afterschool and/or day camps.
A minimum of 1 year of experience working in parks and recreation or related field with lead or senior capacity required.
