Job description

The Assistant Recreation Supervisor plays a key role in coordinating and delivering high-quality recreation and educational programs that enhance community engagement. This position involves a combination of program planning, staff supervision, and direct interaction with participants of all ages. While much of the work is performed independently, the role requires collaboration with supervisors to ensure programs align with city-wide recreational goals and policies. Employees in this position are expected to demonstrate creativity, leadership, and strong organizational skills to foster inclusive and dynamic recreation experiences. Work is evaluated based on goal achievement, program effectiveness, and overall community impact.

Workdays and Hours

Monday - Friday - 8:00am - 5:00pm

Responsibilities
  • Directs and instructs recreational and educational activities and programs.
  • Assists in providing safe and appropriate recreational and educational programs.
  • Assists in training recreation employees, fulltime and seasonal.
  • Assists in planning work schedules and in assigning and supervising seasonal recreation workers.
  • Ensures that regulations are enforced and that equipment is safe and usable.
  • Promotes interest and cooperation of persons in the community.
  • Interprets program policies and objectives for residents of the vicinity.
  • Studies community recreational interests and needs.
  • Assists in determining program costs and in generating revenue and donations to support programs.
  • If certified in therapeutic recreation, assesses individuals with disabilities and creates or modifies programs to provide appropriate recreation experiences.
  • May assist in organizing and supervising music activities, a wide variety of athletic events, arts and crafts activities, Watson Park activities, swimming pool programs, and/or special events.
  • Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.

Qualifications
  • Considerable knowledge of, and personal skill in, a variety of recreational activities or sports.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods of organizing group activities.
  • Considerable knowledge of rules for sports and games.
  • Knowledge of pool operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of the objectives of planned community recreation.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid methods.
  • Ability to organize and direct activities for children.
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public.
  • Ability to maintain recreation equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors when unpleasant weather conditions are present.
  • Ability to move quickly and reach, bend, stoop, twist, or squat and/or other motions for job duties.
  • Ability to move tables, chairs, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, instruct, and supervise groups engaged in recreational activities.
  • Ability to develop interest and cooperation of persons in the community.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of outside agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally, in writing, and/or by whatever creative means are necessary to cross communication barriers.
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Graduation from a four-year college in education or recreation OR three (3) years’ experience in recreation (recreation programming, community engagement, sports management, event planning).
  • A valid Driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience
  • Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
  • Knowledge of pool operations.
  • One year of experience supervising staff or athletic programs/leagues.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
