Job summary

The Harris County Public Defender’s Office is seeking an Assistant Public Defender in the Misdemeanor Division. You will provide holistic, client-centered representation to individuals charged with misdemeanor offenses in Harris County and work closely with investigators, staff, and peers to develop strong defense strategies.

The role requires a Juris Doctor, active Texas bar licensure, and a commitment to indigent defense.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Current Texas State Bar license in good standing.
• Strong writing and advocacy abilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide zealous, client-centered representation in misdemeanor court.
• Conduct legal research and draft motions, memoranda, and pleadings.
• Collaborate with investigators and staff to prepare case files and evidence.
• Develop defense strategies tailored to each client’s needs and goals.
• Maintain regular client communication and, when needed, jail visits.
• Prepare cases for hearings and trials, including negotiations.
• Participate in trainings and continuing legal education.
