Job summary
Van Buren County in Paw Paw, Michigan seeks an Assistant to the Prosecuting Attorney to represent the People of Michigan in legal proceedings and prosecute complaints from the Paw Paw office.
You will advise DHHS staff on child protection matters, review petitions, appear at hearings, conduct pre-trial conferences, and help prepare court cases including motions and trials. A law degree and Michigan Bar membership are required, with at least 3 years of experience.
Qualifications
- Must have a law degree and Michigan Bar membership.
- Minimum 3+ years of experience in related field.
- Knowledge of rules of professional conduct, case law, statutes, court rules, and evidence.
- Strong research and writing abilities and public speaking skills.
- Familiarity with U.S. and Michigan Constitutions and logical thinking.
Responsibilities
- Advise DHHS staff on child protection matters.
- Review petitions for legal sufficiency and approve/deny DHHS child protection petitions.
- Advise police on case investigations and search warrants.
- Review police reports and approve/deny filing of charges against juveniles.
- Conduct pre-trial conferences.
- Appear at family and child protection hearings as needed.
- Prepare and present in court cases including motions and trials.
- Represent petitioners at probation and driver license hearings.
