St. Joseph County Government seeks an experienced Assistant Prosecuting Attorney II to represent the People of Michigan in civil, administrative, and criminal matters across District and Circuit Courts.
You will review warrants, lead trial preparations, interview witnesses, and handle motions, with opportunities to cover multiple dockets and assist in complex cases. On-call duties and occasional remote work are possible.
The Assistant Prosecuting Attorney II represents the People of the State of Michigan on behalf of the Prosecuting Attorney in civil proceedings, administrative hearings, and criminal proceedings; and prosecutes cases in both District and Circuit Court. Reviews and authorizes requests for felony and misdemeanor warrants; Personal Protection Order (PPO) violations; and determines the appropriate charges or disposition. Coordinates with law enforcement regarding preparation and presentation for trial; attempts to resolve and dispose of criminal cases; meets with witnesses and victims; tries cases in court; and provides legal advice to staff including regarding discovery and FOIA. May assist with the Probate Court, abuse/neglect, or child support caseload as needed; reviews petitions to set aside criminal convictions and for post-judgment relief and appears at hearings.

Bachelor’s Degree or higher and Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school.
Ideal candidate has 5+ years of job-related experience and prior prosecutorial experience.
Michigan State Bar Association License in good standing
Valid Driver's License
LEIN/CJIS training is provided upon hire, subject to LEIN Clearance
Skills for job-related software and programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Prosecutor by Karpel, Adobe Acrobat, and AXON Premier Justice

A clean, well-lit office with minimal noise, comfortable temperature range, and Building Security provided by deputies from the Sheriff’s Office. Occasional on-site visits to crime scenes or attendance at autopsies. Availability to work remotely on occasion as approved so long as adequate internet service is available and a professional setting is maintained.
Job duties are split between in-person and Zoom appearances, with in-person appearances scheduled in both the Centreville Courts Buildings and the Three Rivers Court Campus depending on dockets. May appear in other jurisdictions as assigned by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Association of Michigan (PAAM). Must have reliable, legal transportation between court campuses as needed.
