Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan is seeking an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney II to support the Prosecuting Attorney in criminal, juvenile, and civil matters at the Rex B. Martin Judicial Building in Adrian, MI.

The role includes prosecuting misdemeanors, felonies, and civil infractions, and serving as a 24-hour on-call prosecutor. Responsibilities cover legal advisement, warrant preparation, extraditions, and collaboration with law enforcement.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited law school.
• Two to five years of experience in the legal field.
• Member of the Michigan Bar Association.
• Licensed to practice law in all Michigan courts.
• Considerable knowledge of legal research and writing.
• Considerable knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
• Considerable knowledge of state, federal, and local laws and regulations.
• Ability to analyze legal documents and make accurate interpretations.
• Ability to work with the public, law enforcement and government units.
• Computer skills to use word processing and spreadsheets; able to learn software.
• Able to pass background checks and fingerprinting as required by statute.

Job Description

General Statement of Duties:

To serve as an assistant to the Prosecuting Attorney in prosecuting criminal and juvenile matters and civil infractions; and to perform related work as required.

Supervision Received

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney or designee.

Supervision Exercised

Supervision may be exercised over those assigned to assist.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.

• Review and authorize warrant requests and juvenile petitions for the Michigan State Police, Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department and municipal police departments.
• Assist in prosecuting complaints and preparing related legal advice.
• Furnish information on inquiries and complaints submitted to the Office of Prosecuting Attorney.
• Prepare search warrants for the Michigan State Police, the County Sheriff’s Department, and municipal police departments.
• Assist in serving as a legal advisor to various county officials, boards, commissions, agencies, and employees.
• Prosecute misdemeanors, felonies, and other civil infractions in various courts.
• Prosecute and defend civil cases on behalf of the county.
• Process extradition cases.
• Serve as a 24-hour on-call prosecutor for all law enforcement agencies (arrest warrants, search warrants, and consultations), including serving as an on-call prosecutor on weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule.
• Consult with victims of juvenile, misdemeanor, and felony crimes as required pursuant to the state statute.
• Perform related work as required.

Desirable Education, Experience and/or Qualifications:

An employee in this class, upon appointment should have the equivalent of the following training, qualifications and/or experience.

List of Qualifications:

• Graduation from an accredited law school.
• Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in the legal field.
• Member of the Michigan Bar Association.
• Licensed to practice law in all Michigan courts.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of legal research and writing.
• Considerable knowledge of judicial procedures and of the rules of evidence.
• Considerable knowledge of pertinent state, federal, and local laws and regulations and of legal reference sources.
• Ability to analyze legal documents and instruments to make accurate interpretations.
• Ability to work effectively with the public, law enforcement agencies, and other governmental units and employees.
• Computer skills are necessary to effectively utilize word processing, spreadsheet, and the ability to be trained on a specific software program.
• Ability to pass a background check and consent to fingerprinting as required by MCL 15.651-654.

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:

Work is primarily indoors and requires sitting for extended periods.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
Must be able to hear and speak over the phone and in one-on-one communication needs.
Must be able to see, hear and speak effectively and without limitations.
Must be able to stand or sit in one spot for long periods of time, moving arms, hands, back and entire body.
